Educating students to become socially just consumer citizens : a curriculum analysis Wolfe-Enslow, Kelli
Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to determine if the Grade 7 Nova Scotia Textile Arts and Design curriculum contains learning outcomes that can be used to teach students to develop and become knowledgeable consumer citizens as well as provide learning opportunities for students to create critical thinking skills associated with social justice principles. A content analysis and a critical discourse analysis were conducted to determine if the curriculum language supported social justice learning. This particular document showed little evidence of social justice as a guiding concept. To encourage home economics educators to include the goal of educating students to be informed consumer citizens, I then give examples of how social justice may be integrated into the Textile Arts and Design curriculum.
