Exploring food literacy in Whitehorse Voogd, Karin
Abstract
This paper identifies the topic of food literacy as an important aspect of food security. I then explore the breadth of food initiatives currently offered in Whitehorse, Yukon through a secondary content analysis of existing data for evidence of food literacy. The analysis showed that there is a strong foundation of initiatives that can be linked to food literacy in Whitehorse that are positively influencing community life. While there is room for more initiatives encompassing all of the three components of food literacy - food confidence, food wise, and food meaning - alongside further collaboration amongst organizations, the future for “re-establish[ing] the link between ourselves and the food we eat” (Smith, 2009b, p.2) for citizens in Whitehorse is bright. The analysis shows that there are several current initiatives that address some or all of the three components of food literacy and recommendations are made to strengthen what is already in place.
