Engaging in home economics through ecological displays in a library-learning commons Torres, Shawna Lisa Marie

Abstract

I am a home economics teacher currently posted in a position as an elementary school teacher-librarian. In this paper I report on an action research study that portrays my journey in using interactive displays in my library-learning commons. I used the theme of ecology in each display as one way to work toward including home economics in elementary curriculum and pedagogy. I describe three interactive displays that I created using a plan, act, observe, reflect format. Each display related to a different topic which included: flower bulbs, x-rays, and bees. Finally, I discuss how setting up interactive displays can play a role in student learning for ecology and how their practice can expand into other branches of home economics.
