Google this or not? : an exploration of Google Classroom in home economics Sherstan, Cindy L.
Abstract
Digital technologies continue to be at the forefront of all our lives these days. This study was undertaken as an action research project to see how the use of a digital classroom as a hub to other avenues of the Internet, school, community and home would change my pedagogy. I employed the action research cycle of plan, act, observe, reflect in order to move from imagining the project, to implementing it, and finally to review and understand its implications for me personally and for my future practice. Google Classroom was the platform I employed, and through its use came unanticipated issues: the ethics of using a site that stores information outside of Canada; how technology implementation can get in the way pedagogical goals; and the amount of time required to deal with technological glitches and teacher/students scaffolds. This self-study inquiry helped me see my efforts through a different lens after the fact. It has allowed me to refocus on why I wanted to use a digital classroom hub in the first place, and on changes that might inform future efforts.
