Empowering students through critical thinking : media education’s role in home economics Parkinson, Amy
Abstract
My graduating project focuses on the need for media education to be incorporated into home economics programming. I offer a critique of two of the most common teaching approaches to media education – modernist and post-modernist perspectives, analyzing the rationale behind each and outlining potential concerns, finally arguing for a balance between the two, utilizing the strengths of each. Media education’s purpose and pedagogy is then applied to the mission of home economics, with the understanding that critical thinking through the vehicle of media education is central to the values permeating the field of home economics. Media education is offered as a tool in confronting the often unexamined issues surrounding food marketing to children, in hopes of developing students’ moral vision, empowering them to affect change in their lives through ethical consumption. My project is formatted as a resource booklet for home economics teachers, guiding them through the key concepts of media education and food marketing techniques, clarifying the connections between media education and home economics, and offering ideas for implementation, enabling transformative learning opportunities for students. By incorporating the forward-thinking components of media education, the field of home economics has the potential to continue to change its traditional “cooking and sewing” image, serving on the front lines of a progressing society.
