Closing the gap : identifying issues in Family Studies teacher education in Ontario and providing a beginning solution O’Shea, Mary Elizabeth Diane

Abstract

Home Economics education has managed to survive in Ontario despite a long and rough journey. The subject area is now called Family Studies. It is listed under the Social Sciences and Humanities curriculum. Name changes resulting from the dismantling of university programs in Home Economics have led to problems in teacher education and subsequently to the teaching qualifications. Despite the demise there are public calls for Home Economics related knowledge and skills, particularly in food literacy. This paper examines Home Economics education in Ontario and culminates with a new resource guide to support beginning teachers who are teaching in food-related courses.
