No grades assessment in home economics classroom Miller, Brianne
Abstract
My graduating paper investigates the purpose of grading and specifically how a no grade assessment approach would work in home economics. Self-study and action research insights gained from assessing two blocks of Foods and Nutrition 9/10 was used, with the intention to help provide other educators interested in no grades assessment with implementation ideas. By explaining to students my philosophy around assessment and gradually changing the strategy to a more no grades approach, by utilizing rubrics, portfolios and written/verbal feedback they slowly adapted to the change and stopped asking about their grade in the course. The findings about the overall success in reducing student stress and increasing student motivation could have implications in how assessment and feedback are given to students at school, particularly in home economics or other elective courses.
