Infusing critical thinking in home economics education Kokoszka, Jordana

Abstract

This paper documents my teacher inquiry action research project, whereby I explored how critical thinking can be infused into home economics. I began with a literature review, identifying the relationship between critical thinking and education then used this information to plan, act, observe and reflect on my teaching practice. This paper documents the ways in which critical thinking was infused into my home economics classes that included setting up the learning environment, using a problem solving approach and modifying existing lessons to incorporate critical thinking teaching strategies. When critical thinking is infused into home economics courses, students have the chance to develop skills, dispositions and habits of mind of a critical thinker and thus be better equipped to face everyday problems in our changing world. I found that by using infusing critical thinking as a method to improve my practice I gained confidence in expanding my practice from a technical instrumental focus to a more critical focus and in doing so I noticed an improvement in student engagement in my classes.
