Reflection on the role of crafting in school : telling my story Hyatt-Shaw, Anqi Betty

Abstract

There is a growing body of research that suggests youth should be provided with explicit instructions on social emotional skills including an emphasis on self-awareness and selfmanagement skills; social awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships; and responsible behaviours in personal, school, and community contexts (Murray & Pianta, 2009). Textile arts and craft (TAC) is an artistic medium, a method and ways of communication for emotional expression, emotion regulation and stress reduction (Fancourt & Fin, 2019). My graduating paper investigates the purpose and effects of textile arts and craft on student well-being in the home economics related settings. Self-study and narrative inquiry were conducted using my life and teaching experiences in Learning Services, with the intention to reflect, critique and improve teaching practices for my self and others in the field. Through selfstudy, I help myself to navigate the ideal of how learning to craft in high school because it has the potential to help our students learn the necessary cognitive, social and emotional skills necessary for their personal wellbeing for the rest of their life.
