Teaching about controversial issues in Food Studies 12 : a self-study action research project Denham, Cara
Abstract
This self-study, action research project explores three teaching strategies for teaching controversial topics with Foods Studies 12 students. My interest in this research stemmed from a desire to improve my teaching in order to help students consider controversial issues critically from a variety of perspectives and make decisions based on logical and rational evidence. I chose three specific strategies to pair with the teaching of three different controversial topics. The strategies were debate, structured academic controversy (SAC), and Socratic circles. Each of the strategies allowed me to facilitate the learning about the controversial topic with increased confidence and effectiveness. With the proper preparation, each of these strategies allowed me to provide students with opportunities to think critically about controversial topics from multiple perspectives. After using debate, SAC, and Socratic circles, I believe these strategies helped me improve my teaching by providing students with active, student-centered, problem based learning conditions that encouraged critical thinking about controversial issues.
