The art and soul of home economics deLeeuw, Tara

Abstract

This paper explores the connection between art and home economics and how an emphasis on art might bring about more soulfulness to education in general and home economics in particular. My exploration of art is two-fold. One approach is to recognize and build upon the artful nature inherent within home economics (being one of the practical arts) by helping students engage their creativity and imagination, which in itself is nourishing to the soul and leads to the development of soulful attributes. The second is in the viewing and discussing of art as a pedagogical practice to bring forth soulful concepts that can be present within our classroom. A soulful classroom is characterized by a sense of connection and community among its students, where creativity is supported and fostered, where attention is given to the sacred nature of everyday life and where social justice and emancipatory action are revealed and where intimacy, empathy and the conscientious use of resources are experienced.
