Technical skills in high school clothing courses Bodfish, Crystal

Abstract

This paper focuses on technical skills that are part of the curriculum in Home Economics, Clothing Construction, Textile Studies, and Fashion Design courses. It explains the need for resources to support teaching technical skills, explores available resources for teachers, and provides an outline of how technical skills can be taught through meaningful learning experiences. Technical skills are an important component of clothing courses, yet many home economics teachers have had limited access to acquiring them and are constantly seeking resources to support their teaching. Two current textbooks for clothing construction courses and five clothing course curriculum documents from across Canada were analyzed to determine which technical skills are currently recommended for high school. The analysis determined that specific directions on how to teach and learn technical skills were lacking. Therefore, a master list of technical skills (that are either mentioned or implied in the required learning outcomes across the curricula) was created and resources were found to assist teachers in learning and teaching these skills. This is presented as a handbook that can be separated from the main document and shared with teachers. In this paper, it is advocated that technical skills in clothing courses be taught through meaningful learning experiences and this is emphasized in the handbook.
