Ecology as a unifying integrative theme in grade primary Basque, Katia M.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine if the Nova Scotia Grade Primary curriculum contains learning outcomes and/or performance indicators that can be used to teach ecoliteracy. A content analysis was conducted to determine if the curriculum language supported ecology as a unifying theme. This document had some evidence of ecoliteracy as a guiding concept relating to the citizenship competency. Following the literature’s recommendation to teach ecology at a young age, I created a place-based ABC book integrating grade primary outcomes to entice teachers to include the ecoliteracy as goal for the education of young learners. I was able to demonstrate that even though home economics is not a subject area specific in the elementary program in Nova Scotia, Vaines (1994) notion of ecology as a unifying theme can be used introduce grade primary (often known as kindergarten) in Nova Scotia schools.
