Investigating the use of Facebook in the home economics classroom Abbott-Mackie, Gayle Ann
Abstract
There is a growing controversy over the use of Facebook in education; the use of social media is currently a “hot” topic in education, some argue for its integration and others disfavour it. Teachers and students routinely use Facebook and other social media in their personal lives, so there is now significant interest in how might those same tools be put to academic use. Although there are some researchers who have written about the potential of social media in education, only a few studies have specifically addressed its role in curriculum and pedagogy. I believe that the main reason behind this controversy is the lack of solid empirical research about the overall value of not only Facebook but of all popular social media in education. In the spring of 2012, I decided to initiate the use of Facebook in my Home Economics classes. This graduating paper, Investigating the Use of Facebook in the Home Economics Classroom, documents my teacher inquiry/action research project to monitor and to determine its effect on my teaching practice and on the way students experience the course.
