Otherness & Enoughness : Aesthetic and Architecture Boila, Sarah
Abstract
The following book contains two parts, both exploring the aesthetic concept of otherness and enoughness in architecture; part one through thinking, part two through feeling. Part one through thinking presents incongruities amongst familiarity as an unavoidable condition of life, and builds a connection between this part of the lived experience and the aesthetic of otherness and enoughness, composed itself of incongruities amongst familiarity. Theory discussing familiarity, nostalgia, everyday aesthetics, boredom, the uncanny, defamiliarization, humour, and tragedy, are presented. Aesthetic movements that have incorporated incongruities amongst familiarities, including mannerism, dadaism, and postmodernism, are discussed, and contemporary expressions of otherness and enoughness are highlighted. Part two through feeling communicates the concept of otherness and enoughness using form and aesthetic.
