Nueva Ley 20.998 sobre Servicios Sanitarios Rurales Pareja Pineda, Claudio

Abstract

In February 2017, new legislation was passed to delimit and streamline the relationship between the State and the “rural drinking water committees”, updating the regulations for a program that has existed from 1960 and that currently provides water to more than 1.5 million people, around 8% of Chile’s population. This report is subtitled “What does the new law mean, what opportunities and what challenges does it bring to the cooperatives and committees” and accordingly it aims to explain in an accessible manner how the situation will change for these rural services under this new legal framework. It is important to mention that this report responds to the need for spreading the word identified by the president of the Federation that gathers many of these committees and cooperatives.
