Survey of Hiring Practices in Geoscience Industries, 2010 Jones, Francis H. M.

Abstract

This project was conducted to obtain information aimed at helping the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at UBC (a) advise students regarding decisions that affect their careers; (b) develop and maintain appropriate and stimulating curriculum; and (c) recruit students into our programs. Sixty four face-to-face interviews were conducted with individuals from companies of all sizes, with a wide range of experience and seniority, and in the environmental, engineering, mineral exploration, mining, geochemistry, geophysics and a few other related sectors. Consistent themes regarding expectations about students that emerged from the interview data are presented, as well as recommendations about how to improve the data itself and the process of obtaining it.
