Abstract

The safe and sustainable management of tailings and mine waste requires effective communication and information management. The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) discusses the requirement for a tailings management system (TMS), which “comprises the key components for management and design of the tailings facility.” Several key documents are required to form the foundation of the TMS, including the site characterization report, the design basis report (DBR), the operations, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) manual and the emergency preparedness and response plan (EPRP). This paper will focus on how Gold Fields has transformed its approach to OMS manual development and how they integrate with an overarching TMS. This shift offers significant benefits, including the creation of “one source of truth” of information, easier update and maintenance, simplified and targeted training, meaningful integration of tailings management into site systems, and the ability to monitor and assess competency against specific tasks. The paper emphasizes the critical role of effective communication and how role-specific training is key in safe tailings and mine waste management. The paper presents a case study of a transformed OMS Manual in operation at the Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine in Ghana.
