British Columbia Mine Reclamation Symposium
Metal leaching and acid rock drainage innovation and the factors to be addressed Price, W. A.
Abstract
Lots of hard work now and in the future is required to address metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) issues and sustain environmentally sound mining practices. Innovation has and will continue to have a big part to play in this. This presentation reviews some of the many innovations from the 1990s and the factors that need to be addressed in future innovation. Comprehensive understanding of both the scientific and practical aspects is needed to improve ML/ARD practices. This includes limited long-term operating experience, need to enable maintenance, potentially high costs, being proactive, many changing properties and processes, and the large multi-sector information requirements.
