The Tribune was published and edited by John Houston, an outspoken journalist who would later embark on a successful political career, which included four terms as the mayor of Nelson and two terms in the provincial legislature. Houston had established the Miner in Nelson in 1890, and, after leaving the Miner in the summer of 1892, he established the Tribune to compete with his former paper. In August 1901, the title of the paper was changed to the Nelson Tribune.
