AB - Theoretical analysis is presented to investigate the plastic post-buckling behaviour of a thin cylindrical shell restrained by a central mandrel under axial compressive loading. Axisymmetric bulges are formed. Work-hardening is neglected. The Tresca sandwich-shell yield condition is used, and it is found that bulging is most suitably described by a three-hinge model. The bulge length of the collapse mode can be predicted approximately by using the upper-bound theorem. Agreement with the theoretical and experimental results is satisfactory.
