MODERN UNIONISM LECTURE President Estes of the U. B. R. E Addresses a Large fleeting on Tuesday. The opera house was filled at the mass meeting of citizens of Nelson held on Tuesday night, at which president Estes of the U.B.R.E. was the speaker of the evening. The chair was taken hy S. S. Taylor, K.C., and on the platform were Messrs. John Burns, R. A; Elliot, and George Horsted, Dr. Wright and Rev. J. Reid. - Mr. Taylor introduced the speaker of the evening in a short eulogistic speech, and controverted some of the misstatements made against labor unions. He also read letters from the heads of departments under whom Mr. Estes had worked, showing that the reports detrimental to Mr. Estes which have been circulated in Vancouver were wholly false; that he had worked for the Southern Pacific over eleven years and left voluntarily. Mr. Esvtes beganjiis lecture by saying that as this would he^iis only opportunity of addressing a kelson audience during this visit, he was going to try and condense five lectures into one, as he wished to give a general outline-of trades unionism in its.- varied phase.. He began by explaining the work of the operating department of railways, showing how each superintendent "of every division of a railway, had to send in reports of the expenses of operating his division, made out solas to show- to .*> fraction of a cent the"cost per -ton per mile of all freight carried. Then, at the head ofiice these costs were all tabulated and sent to each, superintendent, and the man who was the highest at once started in reducing, this going on and-on indefinitely, with the result that each man employed on railioad work on American lines in 1896 handled 445 tons of freight, whilst in 1900 each man handled 491 tons. The average amount per annum paid as wages in 1896 was.$567.60, whilst in 1900 the average was reduced to _$5f>2 -per man per annum, although- they handled 46 tone more freight to each man, or over 46,000,000 tons. Out of l^O.OOO railway, men, only.-248,000 were-organized! These facte reminded Mr. Estes of - a .visitjie once made to a'lunatic asylum, whore two.friends of his: were keepers. They/ had^fif ty <", dangerpue-lariatics-. in- .fch'eir,,charge_i?- .Tie* said ?^A^e^V.itnotr .afraid thevjwilL-comDincaifd overpower you-two:' ,~"Oh, no" said'one- friend, "crazypeopleneyercombine?'-' * - * Speaking of labor-saving^devices, Mr. Estes said they "were all*, right if properly used." He was shown-an. air-compressor or wind-jammer in one shop which saved in that .shop the 1-ibor of fifteen men. He asked themauager what became, of these'men.* "I don't know," he said. "They"were let out, and where ,we employed 100 men we now .employ 85." : Mr. Estes argued that this was not the proper way to use labor-saving devices'. What should he done, he said, was to reduce the hours of labor so as still to employ the 100 men, otherwise the 15 men let out may go hungry; and" if this kind of thins goes on you may have a French revolution or something"worse. "-* " Mr. Estes then went on lo talk about freight classification and the standardization of wages. J. M. Egan, president of the general manager's association, wanted standard* wages in each department of railway work. This meant that the rate of wage prevailing iirthe East should be accepted in the West.What- was -wanted,however, was that the wages paid in the West should be paid in the East, and there should be a leveling up and filling in, instead of a leveling down. Speaking next on federation and amalgamation, he said, in federation if one organization becomes disgruntled it can pull out and is no worse off. In an amalgamation, such as .the U.B.R.E., however, any branch could* pull out, but it could not take the treasury with it. He instanced the case of the amalgamation of United R. E. Sacramento, No. 5, which had over 2,000 members, meeting every Monday* as brethren, the* engineers, track walkers, blacksmiths, etc., all sitting together-; but not bringing .up business pertaining only to their-own order.^ The engineers, blacksmiths, etc., meet as separate orders on special nights, when the business of each order is brought up. If the engineers have a grievance, they talk it over; then it is presented to the official'who can put it right. If he and those above him refuse to interfere, it is then brought to the meeting at which all in the amalgamation are present and discussed. Then, if a strike isdgclared, it has the assistance and support of the whole of the. amalgamation of United R. E. - Mr. Estes then went on to explain that railway men had great difficulty in leaving any company, owing to the system of clearance cards, as, if a certain mark was put upon the card its significance was known to those to whom it was presented and employment was refused. Then, again, some companies would not engage men- over 45 years old, others 40 years and down to 28 years, so that if a" man left his employment he might not be able to get work on any other line. True unionism, Mr. Estes said, is not the endonly the means. There should be no use for anyNinion; the government should be sufficient protection to the working man. You now pay two unions. Why? Because a class has captured the government. You have the ballot, but class leaders put up the men you vote for, and whichever side get8 in the working men get left. .Mr. Bodwell tried to persuade Mr. Justice Walkem that he (Estes) wanted the men to strike, and ordered them to do so.. The very reverse was the case. He wanted no strikes. Every strike is a lo*-sworse loss in the United States iban here. In a big strike the. employers call out the- police and they shoot the strikers, or the striker is taken before a court which the employers own, and in the end if the men win and get a 10 per cent raise, the various employers get up a cry of dear labor and raibe price? of food and raiment 30 per cent, so-you are out 20 per cent anyway. In conclusion, Mr. Estes said the ballot box is the only salvation. .Everything else is only thimble-rigging. Do not let party bosses put up figure-heals for you. In the States both Democrats and Republicans were working for the millionaires. At San Francisco the Democrats and Republicans put up two millionaires, Tobin and , Wells, for mayor. The working men put up Eugene E. Schmidt*, and carried him against thf millionaires. There was a strike of street car employees, and had either Tobin or Wells been mayor the police would have been armed and - put on the ca**s, as the manatrer of the company requested should be done. But Schmidt said no; if there was any lawlessness on fhe part of the men he would punish it. The consequence wns that everything was quietno fichtsand the strike was settled in a few days. A collection was taken up when Mr." Estes had been speaking about anhour, and after continuing for another hour in a most fluent and convincing manner, Mr." Estes resumed his* seat amid loud applause. VThe receipts for the year amounted to $4,197, and the expenditure to $4,112. The officers of the church elected for the ensuing year were: Lav delegates, G. Johnstone, F. Irvine, and sheriff S. P. Mr. Johnstone suitably responded. After the usual vote of "thanks to the choir, ladies' aid, and other church societies, the meeting closed. ,, NELSON SUCCESS CLUB. The "at home" held at Fraternity hall on Thursday evening last proved a most enjoyable affair. About forty couples took advantage of the dancing. The number present was not as large as expected, but all expressed themselves as having spent a most pleasant evening. The secretary, Mr. Hansford, is entitled to great praise for the hard work done in making the arrangements. Mr. Hodge, floor manager, and the committee did all possible to add to the pleasure of the club's guests. Gymnasium classes are being formed to take a regular course of instruction during thc"next six weeks. L. J. Whitaker has consented to act as instructor, and only a nominal chargo will be made, to members. There will be men's and boys' classes which will meet regularly every week, and during instruction hours w.'ll have exclusive use of the gvmnasium. The cricket club will hold a meeting for organization this week at the club rooms. All interested in the game are invited to be present. I think most of us nre glad, that Lent is over; things-social have'-been insufferably dull and drove a good many in despair to the daily afternoon service the rector rather-timidly inaugurated, but which turned out better than he drea med. Everybody went to church on Easter day; they had it rather nicely arranged at the altar and we had that "surplice choir which we have all been talking about for works. I, for one, would have liked the whole service, responses and everything, intoned; it seems to fit in better "where there is a white-robed choir. Ho^5vej'7J'Jiis_may -biTtheleavetlihgof-the service all round and you known how much 1 always liked a good high ritual. * Taking it all round, I think the gowns on Sundays were decidedly mild, free from that ultra gaudiness which has been characteristic of the past Easter Siinday morning service., Nellie wore that dream of a dress she* got in. London last winter at Paquin's; although not showy for -ityle, it>vas far ahead of anything in the church'. I admired Mrs; Hammer's beautiful lace sollar she wore over a velvet body. 1 thought the idea original and decidedly good taste. 1 had nothing very showy this yearhave to be careful these days, you know, so I was what I would call mildly gowned. The church was full as usual, and the weather being mild we were not threatened with suffocation. We were no sooner ont of Lent ttian we flew to the theatre.' Mrs. Davis put on a double bill, "Barbara" and "Jane," which I think was a mistake, as.the play lasted till close on to midnight. They waited at first for the church meeting to finish, which I thonght a trifle unfair to the audience, particularly as the performance was in aid of the boat club and everyone's motley was acceptable. "Barbara" was the lever du ride au, rather a nice little one-act play by Pinero. Mrs. Davis was very natural in the title role, and Ivy Johnson did remarkably well as Lillie; the latter seemed quite at home on the stage. Mr. Stewart, as Cecil, gave us some good acting, and so did Alleyne Wright, as Finnicurn. . Jane was exceedingly well played by Mrs. W. Davis. That wretched old _Kershaw, not knowing his part in spite of the audible yelling of the prompter, rather spoiled it in the latter part. Of course, Oecil,-aa Tipson, was immense, and lie andjMrs. J.avis, as 'Jane, kept up the fun. The idea of tlie play is intensely funny; trying to make it appear to an old uncle,Jwho is nupporting a spend thrift, nephew, that the nephew is married, and to put up a job on the old man is the plot. Jane, the housemaid, is made to do duty in consideration of s'alue received from the nephew, Charley Shack leton', which young Blakemore played rather wellfar better than his first attempt in "Caste," when you were here. Mrs. C. Cummins amused the'c'rowd -immensely as Mrs. Ohadwick. ,That imp, .Reggie Cummins,- was quite good; Mrs. M. S. Davys, as Mrs. Pixton. was .natural; Alleyne Wright, as Pixton, had not enough to do, while, as Lucy Norton, Ivy Johnstone did not have scope to show her latent- artistic powers as well as in "Barbara." Still, we had-a good time, and personally tender thanks to all who took part in the plays for an evening's amusement.'- I am afraid there is a risk of there being no regatta this year. These dreadful niei^j*^'e^fa^njnitiKer_th_e_Domin^ ion Day celebration, with the result that the business people*of the town are against having anything watery on July 1st and 2nd, and there is open war between them and the boat "club. I told Harold that it was a mistake to antagonize*" those who have patronized the club liberally, but he is so obstinate. We will have to hope for the best, but it will be a great disappointment should it fall through for want of funds, particularly as so many of lis are going across the water this summer. / There are one or two dances in sight, but they- have not aroused any great interest. People are more attached to the latest, kind of fly than a dance," and hats trimmed with flieR are in evidence. You should see Edith in that thing she calls a fishing suit.. It's killing; bought it last year, she says, in Oxford street; it looks as if it came from City Road. It's a sort of a cross between a man's khaki suiting and an ordinary green cottonade; very short skirt which will he talked about, and a hat in straw as flat as a buckwheat cake. She is gone on it, and it's hopeless to remonstrate. Now, mind yon write, and he careful of that piazza, especially on moonlight nights with soft music around; there are many/dreamy paths m the grounds and a veritable maze, if I remember aright. Rarely has Easter dawned in Nelson with brighter ray than on Sunday lust: As though to make amends for much absence of late and join in the festival, the sun flooded the valley with its joyous beams from dawn till eve. There was, however, a slightly chilly feeling in the air hardly appropriate for April. Many people probably mentally withstood this, fey way of reflection on that hot wave we may anticipate next month, when yesterday will be looked back upon as one of ideal climatic conditions. . * - The stimulus given to religiouB exercises during Lent by the English and Roman Catholic churches reaches the climax .on Easter day and is-signalled by an outburst-of congregational service. In the case of St. Saviourjs, more than usual interest was attached to the service this year on accoiinb of their in* press iv en ess being rendered nnusu- j1Jly-j1._t.rj1cU.v0—by—the- introduction of- fche boy chorister and the surpliced choir. In these days of wide diversity of opinion within the church 0x1 the question of ritual, any innovation .of this kind is watched -with great interest, there being many who regard any enlargement of the ritual as a stepping stone to high church practices, ritualism, and the ungrounded fear—a remnant of tlie reformation—Rome. ' No impartial observer, however, could by any chance have seen in the impressive services at this church on Sunday anything calculated to disturb the peacepf mind of the most sensitive low churcliman. It would seein yultra fussy for anyone, let alone a member of the church, to take exception to the inspiring choral service, which gives to the ritual and familiar hymns-a value far beyond the oiost monotone service ever heard. The choirmaster and organist, is tcT be • congratulated on the success attending the arduous work incidental to the introduction of the boy chorister and processional. - The new seating arrangement in the choir perm its. of better harmony, and the general appearance of the aisle and chancel was brightened on this- occasion by a liberal display of lilies. _The morning-service-includedrTe Deum, Simper in E flat; Anthem, "He is Risen," Simper, and Communion service "Dykes iu F." In th---evening the anthem, "Why Seek Ye the Living?'' was given, and at bothfservices appropriate voluntaries were introduced. The rector preached excellent sermons at both services. At the Roman Catholic church of St. Mary the Immaculate there was a large congregation at high mass. This church is happily located and catches the fullness ot the morning sun. The interior shone with a brightness in keeping with-the great day and the theme, which was well set forth by Father Altorf in his discourse. Following this came the celebration of the mass, that impressive service on which the sun never sets, and which has given to the great church her immense vitality.. The rich' Gregorian music was rendered, in a manner that no scoffer could have been entirely indifferent to and no worshipper but better from its uplifting influences. At the other churches the festival was recognized by way of appropriate music and sermons. The Presbyterian and Congregational churches particularly gave more prominence than usual to the day, a fact which is interesting to note in these days of shifting religious thought and opinion on ritual among the dissenting churches. Altogether, theie are no indications, judging^ hy the display of interest in the church services last Sunday, that the religious spirit in pur midst shows any signs of incipient decay. Rather is it that with the years are the pressing problems of life seeking more and more the solution that the highest religion alone can give. F. W. P.
