To liiu Kililov of llio lii'vi'i,. rour. II uit-i.e: Sll:, For some months past we have heard a great deal About intolerance and bigotry from lho' press of the country which supported the Autonomy Coercion Bill. Wo have lieard much of tho beautiful and toler ant spirit of thc Province of\" Quebec and because of .this I have followed with interest the experience of the. Salvation Army in the district of St. Louis an annex of the city of Montreal. The following extracts from eastern papers concerning tlie trouble and its afteriiialh will show wliat. vve must look for whenever the influence of Humanism becomes .dominant in Canada: The outrage to which; the members of Hie Salvation Army were submitted at St. Louis de .file End. a suburb of iNIonlreal, recently, has been accentuated hy the decision of Judge Sicotte when the disturber was brought before him upon the complaint of the Salvation Aimy authorities. ' The evidence given went to prove that the Army was holding ils meeting within i its own premises in a peaceful and orderly manner. That outside a mob of French Roman Catholics gathered ami adopted every mean? in llieir power to disturb the- me.ting. Tli.y leader., call 1 he pri'ileatanl. of Ontario bigots, and who for months past have been lit .isling of the tolerance of the French-Canadians. .Ve might (ind some excuse for the action cd' the mob in their ignorance, but what can be said for Ihe priest who commended such a course, or for the judge who condoned it b.v his decision;-' If Pro- te.sl.anls iu the 1'i-ovince of Quebec have not llu-rigiit lo assemble peacefully and hold religious servicesif the law vvill not ptolecl. theni in lhe exercise of this elementary right of citizenship -how shall vve eliaraeleri'/.e Unpeople of that i'i'ovincei- What shall we say of Iheir leaders, tlieir priests and Iheir judges:1. The Huntington Cleaner, which represents l'rotcstaiil ^enlimciit iu the .''astern Townships, after quoting the. deei .tin of Judge Sieol le adds: Dislurbers of meetings are, of necessity dissenters, for if they were not dissenters from the purpose of the meeting they would not disturb it. lt follows, according to this dictum of Judge Sicotte's, that they are nol to be punished. Suppo.se a parallel case on the olher side. During the Lenten season services are held in Montreal in one or two chin-lies I'or the conversion of Fnglish-speaking Protestants. Suppose, while one of these meetings was going* on, aman imitated the conduct of Pierre (latilhier, and, vvith a cigar in his band, pushed lus way to the front, and, ascending the pulpit, shouted he was an Englishman and a Protestant and tliis was no place for Protestants to lie, and he would ask till Protestants to stand up and follow him (Hitallowing the priests to continue peacefully their services. Supposing a Protestant acted in such an outrageous manner, was arrested and brought before..Judge Sicotte for disturbing a religious meeting, would he acquit him because he was a dissenter and the audience was composed of dissenters? Would Judge Sicotte not condemn the man for breaking up a religious meeting, and the severest sentence ho could pass would heap- proved by Protestants. The evidence vvas conclusive lhat Gatilhier broke up tlie Salvation Anny meeting. His triumphant acquittal strengthens the disagreeable impression that the administration of justice'has heen in 1.1 u- ericed by exterior -consideration. It seeiiis impossible of belief that such has occurred in a country over which llotits 'the' Union Jack but it serves lo open our oyes to the full significance of current history in Canada. ' *.- ' The victim of the otiliagcous deed was Kitnicp,- the bright little c'aiighler ol: Mv. and Mrs. Alex L. Archibald, of Fourth avenue, who is not yet quiUi I wo ve;|i-s old. Sho .was. playing around the house on Tuesday afternoon last, ,and it was when her mother was busily engaged that she strayed from home, going west along Fourth avenue. Sho was gone about an hum; and when slie re!urned the brand of the' letter ._ was plainly*marked on her left cheek. Tlie huming of Ihe brand did not seem to pain the child much at the time, but for a couple of days following she suffered a gieat deal, and medical .aid was sought and her pain was relieved us much as possible. 'Fortunately the. brand was not pressed hard enough to leave a permanent scar, and it is now disappearing although the oul line of tlie stamp and the letter S is still plainly visiblo. The child is not old enough to talk yoL or tell where the brand wtis put. on, so lt\"V'.Js_.|il TlTiTjWfOTtitfffRraRr coinmilied the trick or what their reason could have heen for doing it, lull it was so well put on and so evenly that Ihey are inclined to believe that, it. as 11 deliberate act on the part of some grown person. iKiiitii ? iaiifl Ihrough ICiirope the world. * I , 1', Mr. Culdei's sermon was not only [ in!eri'sl ing froni a moral standpoint, s ! bill, was bi'iii'lliiial from a historical ,; point of view.
