At present all the roads, trails and bridges in South" East Kootenay are in excellent condition. The big dividend paying mines ' , of British Columbia are situated in the,Fort Steele district. , , The St. Eugene has paid dividends amounting to $2l0,000. The North Star *117,000.^/ It is the opinion of experts - - that several properties-on Alki Creole contain immense copper deposits. ' Capital is needed to , make further development that will - add a large number of ' producing mines to this district - It is stated that* the Perry Crook Gold Mines Company, will install a 40-stamp mill on their mines next spring. Placer mines on Perry creek have laid in supplies( for exten- sive winter working" - b' Tho placer deposits on Wild Horse creek are only seven miles long, and has been continuously worked)for 39 years, . , and as yet shows no signs of exhaustion. The North Star mine has been a steady and constant producer; for several.years. , This year it - is the. largest dividend paying mine in British*Columbia. ' The * St. Eugene miue the largest-silver-lead producer in British Columbia "last year,, is practically shut down. ' ,. Development on the Aurora proves that the'"ore body is , widening out. It is a good promising property. Of all, the, many reports made by experts on this district there is none but expresses the greatest, sanguinity of its great riches The^ores of the Alki creek district are for the most part high grade copper. Experienced miners rarely ex< pect tofind the true course of a vein until they have sunk several ; hundred feet and have gotten down to what is known as "solid formation". Many groups of mines are being opened up in the St. Mary's river district, and several are making good showings. Tho copper situation is unchanged in the United States. Copper is strong at 17 cents. There will be a moeting in Now Yorlc this month by mine owners to discuss the lead situation with the lead trust syndicate. The men who create the mines of the future require encouragement and to secure laws favorable to that end. In South East Kootenay the districts that are attracting attention are Wild Horse, Perry and Weaver creek, in which placer mining is the chief occupation. The old time prospector of the early sixties formed the foundation of the Port Steele mining district. In every range of the mountains in the Fort Steele, district development work is being pushed with great vigor. , The St. Eugene is one of the best equipped mines in British Columbia. . , It is the intention of the Wis consin company which bought the placer.[diggings on Perry creek to thoroughly equip and work the'property on an extensive scale. Gold 'mining is, the most/fas cinaiing,, safe, lucrative and independent "occupation iii the world. Everyday, week,'month and year marks with emphasis the fact that the mineral resources of the Fort Steele district are boundless. New development in the (Id placer, mines of the Port Sterle district is the dominating feature which enlists attention 'to this section of South East Kootenay. The coal industry in Souih East Kootenay is yearly becoming more and more import afi I. ' REDISTRIBUTION. OLD ABE BONDED. Thirty ~ Thousand Dollars is ' the , , Amount of the Bond. Present developments would indicate that the new owners have secured a remarkably good property? Masonic Gathering-. There was a large gathering of the,Masonic fraternity in Fort Steele on Saturday last. The occasion being an emergency convocation of Rocky Mountain Chapter R. A. M. There were present representatives from all over the district. During ihe day and evening two teams of three were exalted to the Royal Arch degree. Immediately after the initiatory services the visiting companions and member's of Kocky Mountain Chapter assembled in the spacious dining room, of the Imperial Hoi el to partake of a banquet which had ,been prepared by Manager , Reineinan under the auspices of the Chapter. The banquet was all that could be desired, nothing was ommitted. and every one present were loud in their praises of the good things which were served. After the edibles had disappeared, Most Excellent Companion Armstrong, acting as toast master proposed 'The King" responded to by Companion Galbraith in appropriate remarks, and on account.of tho lateness of the hour, the affair closed with the singing of "God Save the King". This event will long be re- How It Can Be Accomplished. Redistribution which is agitating the people of British Columbia at this time will be' found to'be not so easy of accom plishment as many appear to think it will bo. It,is a matter of history that redistribution heretofore has been accomplished by party government. And logically, we cannot see that it can be accomplished in any other way than it has hereto before been. For instance not by a", coalition ' government, which, the present local government undoubtedly is. To illustrate, it is natural that both parties to this coalition would seek to prevent their- .'respective constituencies being reduced or cut off, to very possibly the ad1 vantage of the. opposite party. And it is only necessary to consider this matter carefully to see that any redistribution by such,a government would prove ineffective and fall far short of the wishes and expectations ' of the Province at large. It is conceded however, that redistribution is necessary, and being nee'esj sary, some effort must and should be made" to meet the wishes and demands of the electors, though the conditions certainly. do not point to its being done as effectively as the demand requires. Bearing theforegoing in mind and the absolute need in-.the in- terest of the Province that redistribution should be taken in hand, it is suggested that the .Legislative Assembly as its'first work next session,,, should pass an acfenabling the Chief Justice of the SupremeyCourt and'his co-judges to make" a redistribution on fair and impartial' lines. Such' redistribution when made would be .beyond question, on account of the standing of these gentlemen, by either party, and at the same time it is safe to conclude it would be fair; impartial and more equitable - than if attempted by the present coalition legislature, and most certainly to be more satisfactory to" the Province in general. The foregoing is recommended by The Prospector as a safe and impartial means of obtaining this much needed'adjustment of seats in the local house. Thcamount appropriated by the house last* session for South East Kootenay was small, in fact the smallest for any district in the province, and inadequate for a district as important, as the Fort, Steele district. As the small amount appropriated was intended lo cover the entire district, strict economy was practised by those in charge. The result, has been that not a dollar has been wasted the roads and trails this year have boon constructed in a manner that rcilccts great credit to those in charge. The future cost of maintenance will be small the bulk of the future appropriations will be used in constructing new roads and trails.
