Leach, who went out with the second contingent from Fort Steele, has received his commission as Lieutenant. His picture has been in the Montreal and Winnipeg papers,, fortunately they were labeled, otherwise his friends at ForfSteclc would not have recognized him. WINNirEG ENTHUSIASTIC. The Strathcona Horse Met With a ' Grand Reception. i The people of Winnipeg gave the members of the Strathcona Horse a rousing reception last Monday. Notwithstanding the' intense cold, a big crowd assembled at the depot to welcome them. The special train in which the soldiers travelled was gaily decorated. On the Fort Steele coach was attached a large streamer on which were the words: "-East Kootenay. L>. 0. troop, from Steele to Pretoria.'' while a streamer on the Nelson coach read: ������From Nelson to Pretoria, or bust. Strathcona Horse.". Horn streamers were embellished with Union Jacks and military accoutrements. The men were escorted to the drill hall, where a fine feed' was furnished, after which they listened to patriotic speeches. At the oconclusion of the speeches the men lined up and after the roll had been called they marched to the station. Harry Melton, a popular citizen of Fort Steele, B. C., marched at the head of the procession with the"Union Jack."' Mr. Mel- ton. who until a few' years ago whs a United States citizen,wore a Stars and Stripes hat band and his appearance created much enthusiasm.
