The Phoenix Pioneer was published in Phoenix, in the Kootenay Boundary region of southern British Columbia, and ran from April 1898 to May 1916. The Pioneer was published by the Pioneer Publishing Company, which was managed by W. B. Wilcox (from 1899-1908) and Thomas Alfred Love (from 1908-1911). On August 12th, 1910, the headquarters of the Pioneer burned down, together with a large portion of the town of Phoenix itself, and the paper consequently suffered serious financial difficulties. On April 11th, 1911, the Pioneer was sold to Gilbert Kay, who published and edited the paper until May 1916. Wednesday evening the first'political meeting held here-, since the election was announced, took place at Miner's Uuion ball, the electors turning out in large force for the' occasion. The meeting was called by the Conservatives, to give the voters a chance to hear their candidate, Martin .Burrell, of Grand Forks, and it is probably the only opportunity Mr. Burrell will have before November 22 to appear here, so great is the demand on his time and so many are the[ places to be covered in this large constituency. G. W. Rumberger was chairman of the meeting, and annoqneed the first, speaker, Ernest Milller, of Grand Forks, with a.few preliijiinary remarks. Mr. Miller spoke for1; half an- hour from the Conservative;standpoint, and showed where the-Liberals had failed to keep their promises to the people in the years that they had been in power at Ottawa. He regretted that Smith Curtis, who spoke for the Liberals the night before, in Grand, Forks, was not present; although invited. It surprised him, that Mr. Curtis, who had always been such a champion of the labor cause, was now doing all he could to get Duncan Ross, a Liberal, into office at Ottawa. Mr. Miller also touched on the Grand Trunk Pacific contract, hut left details to the candi- aaterwtiowoutaspeaK-iater.-*'' '-'-z -- R. B. Kerr'. Remark*. R. IJ. Kerr the well known Phoenix Socialist, was the next speaker, and when he arose received an enthusiastic reception. Mr. Kerr did not understand why the candidate did not speak first, and thus give him (Mr. Kerr) a chance to reply. However, he would tell some of the things that Socialists had done in the pst. He took up the argument that it was useless to vote for a Socialist because only one could be elected occasionally, and a few in the local or Dominion houses would, therefore, be able to do little or nothing for the cause. He cited several, cases at Vic-, toria, where two Socialists had been able to secure the passage of legislation that was of distinct benefit to the laboring classes of this province, it being known that the two Socialists, Mr. Hawthornthwaite and Parker Williams, practically held the balance of power between the Conservatives and the Liberals. . > Mr. Kerr also went on to say that the fact of Mr. Miller's telling' what terrible fellows tbe Liberals were, was of no consequence, because it was merely a case of the pot calling the kettle black. He thought new old party was just as bad as the other, and while he did not expect the Socialists to win' at this election, as the Liberals would undoubtedly get a rousing majority, tlie Socialists would win sometime, and not so many years away either. He did not believe in the transcontinental railway pljins of either Sir Wilfrid Laurier or Mr.-Borden, for he did not see how the working men would benefit particularly in either event. Freij-hts might be a little lower, and living a trifle cheaper, but the laboring man would not reap the benefit, and his wages would not be raised. Mr. Kerr quoted statistics to prove that in the eight years of Liberal rule, from 1896 to 1904, the cost of living in the United States arid Canada had actually increased from $77 per capita to $99. Candidate Burrell Speaks. Martin Burrell, Conservative candidate for Yale-Cariboo, then took the floor, and spoke steadily for an hour, rapidly and interestingly, and covered a great amount of ground in his remarks. He paid a compliment to Mr. Kerr's address in opening, and said that he did not pretend to defend the mistakes of any party, as he knew they all made some mistakes, even the Socialists. He-did riot believe that the ,Conservatives jvpre as .black as they were painted, but\", he .did believe tnat they had the trtpst practical and business like platform'now before the people. -./.-- The candidate rapidly outlined the details of .the Grand Trunk Pacific con tract, showing bow the officers of (hat company themselves-had told their own shareholders thaMt was a splendid bargain for them, for the simple reason that the company would only be liable for about one-tenth of;the cost of the line,, andihe people of; Canada would finance the balance. .Y.He\" lucidly explained that the u-unpro'i table part to operate, the eastern section, was to be built by the pebplej while*the profitable western end was to be built by the company with the credit of the people of Canada. Mr. Burrell also stated that at the end of the proposed 50 year lease the company could give up the line if it wished, but retain all the feeders and branches themselves, -together with terminals, etc., thus leaving the line at the mercy of other lines, beginning nowhere, ending nowhere, and having no terminal facilities, Referring to, befter terms, Mr. Burrell said that the people ybf British Columbia are now paying Iqto the Dominion treasury $3 pet head for every dollar*-paid by the residents of the eastern provinces, and ihat all efforts so far to get the Liberal government to readjust matters had' been fruitless, although when this election was on, some promises had been made About two millions per-year are now being paid by this province to the Dominion more than is received by the province from the Dominion. ' Mr. Burrell closed by saying that he stood before them as arfarmer, one interested in the country, and asked their suffrages on the platform he had outlinedgovernment ownership of the new railway when built,' better terms for this province, etc.:' - HEART WAS\" CUT IN TWO DECEMBER 1st IS THE DATE Boundary Mining Notes For Blowing in Second Furnace at Boundary Falls. VICTIM OF A BUSTING ACCIDtNT Salratore Doraailco, Foremaa for Johatoa & Brandt, Sab-Contractors ae V.V. & E., Successfully Set Olf a .Hissed Charge. Last Monday Constable Darraugh brought details of. a terrible accident that took place in. Summit camp, on the constrnction of the Great Northern railway branch to Phoenix, that morn ing, in which one man lost his life. It was the old, old story of an un- exploded blast, with the sickening details that so often accompany such events, the victim being a foreman for Johnson & Brandit, sub-contractors. Salvatdre Domanico, the man in question, arose about midnight Sunday and proceeded to a point half a mile from the camp where a number of charges had been fired on the grade the night before, but where it was well known one blast had failed to explode. His idea was to set off that blast before the regular crew vent to work, and to remain there until the men came, to save going back to camp, and gave instructions to have his breakfast brought to him. This was the last seen of him alive. Exactly how the accident happened no one knows, as there were no wit nesses to the fatality. The explosion, .which must have taken place when Domanico was working at the charge, mutilated his body horribly, the trunk being thrown a thousand yards distant, his legs and arms being broken in several places or severed entirely, and his heart being found cut in two. His scalp was found in his hat some distance away. On communicating with Dr. G. M. Foster, corner, of Greenwood, it was decided that no inquest was necessary under the circumstances, and the remains of the unfortunate man were gathered together, and shipped to Grand Forks for burial. Domanico, like many Italians, had taken an English name and was known as Sammy Ross. He had been railroading for years, having been with Johnson & Brandit for six or seven years, and had been on this contract for two or three months. He leaves a widow and child in Italy to mourn his loss. It is now definitely announced that the second furnace of the Montreal & Boston's smelter at Boundary Falls wilPbe blown in on the ist.of December. By that time the arrangements fot doubling the shipments, from the company's mines in this camp will have been fully completed, so that 600 or 700 tons of, ore : can be sent out daily with the greatest of ease. The Rawhide mine alone, adjoining the Snowshoe, will be able to maintain the 300 ton daily rate, or even more if needed, while the Brooklyn, Stem- winder and Athelstan can increase the shipments readjly if desired. , Development work at all the mines of the company is going on in most satisfactory shape, larger ore bodies being opened up, and the capacity for shipments can be greatly increased whenever it shall shall be deemed wise to increase the same.,, . While the officials will, at this time, say nothing of the matter for publication, it is becoming well known that the operations of the one furnace at the company's smelter thus far have been exceedingly gratifying to the management in a financial way, and are thus verifying the predictions made for this consolidation months ago, when it was in the process of formation. This will be pleasant news to every one- interested in the. success of mining and smelting in the Boundary. FROM THE LOCAL DUMP. Since Mr. Cranston began booking shows for this section, the plays average up much better. F. W, G. Mortimer. James McCague, who spent the summer in the northern part of the province, and the last two months at Hedley, returned to Phoenix last Monday. He states that the Nickel Plate town is prosperous and the mine and mill are working steadily, with what are reported to be most satisfactory results to the management. Ore is being taken out from the Silver King to make a car shipment to the smelter. Two cars daily, or 60 tons, are being sent out regularly from the Stem- winder mine in this camp. The First Thought mine, at Orient, and the Mountain Lion, at Republic, are shipping to the Granby smelter. A find of native copper was made at the Athelstan this week, the specimens beinjj of a most handsome character. A new skip has been ordered for the Brooklyn mine. It will handle three tons at a trip, nearly, donble the capacity of the skip at present in use. -,\"' ''-. ' Bunkhouses to accommodate 50 or 60 men are to be erected at once at the RaMhide mine, from which property shipments are to be started in two or three weeks. Patrick J Dermody, for years foreman at the Granby mines up to July ist last, has accepted a similar position with the Providence Mining Co., and began his duties on November rst. The six men who have the contract for sinking in the Granby mines from the 300 to the 400 foot level, are down 30 feet, and probably will\" have the contract completed in a month. Supt. Hodges states that the six furnaces at the Granby smelter will all be in blast again today, and all but one of them will be connected ...with his new arrangement for electric self charging. Shareholders iri the.Morrison mine, which was to have been taken into the Montreal & Boston Consolidated, are wondering what has been done in the matter, as little or no information is forthcoming. '\"' At the Lancashire Lass, in Summit camp, according to report, Foreman Cunningham is opening up a magnificent body of iron ore, with good copper values, for the Montreal & Boston Consolidated. A surface tramway 1,400 feet long can be made to connect the mine with the C. P. R. Phoenix branch. A hundred thousand feet of lumber have been ordered for the Rawhide tramway and other improvements, ex- eSn^ Bresnahan has stripped the ore body on'this property some 500 feet up the hill, giving an immense tonnage that can be easily and cheaply quarried. The Winnipeg mine is to be put up at auction again soon, to satisfy the judgment labor leins. The lein claims amount to about $4,300, but it is hardly probable that any of them but those for labor will realize. It is now about a year since the property was closed by the bank of Montreal on a note, but which concern will not realize one cent on its belated judgment.
