We___b.1^ **^ ii ii______Wmr-~.^^^ 11 I WMUMM*11'1*' ESTABLISHMENT of a Regional Pis- trict on the Sunshine Coast two years ago was viewed with the usual misgivings and certain trepidation by many taxpayers and certainly, to this time, it is extremely doubtful if achievements have warranted the high cost involved. Most sorry situation is that of the garbage disposal district approved a year ago. Since that time three dumps have been established, Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour and each one of them has presented problems. As to an actual collection disposal system, it would appear we still have a long wait ahead- However, this is not altogether the fault of the Board for it was faced with problems regarding compilation of assessment rolls. For assistance an approach was made to Victoria but was rejected until a barrel of publicity was fired by way of The Times and threat of resignation by the Board. Assurances quickly followed that IBM cards would be supplied by the surveyor of taxes. This has proved a major operation although indicatoins now are that light is dawning and action might be expected to materialize without too many more months passing. Passing of the recent Water Supply and Distribution By-law might well be taken as an expression of faith by the public and the coming year will provide ample opportunity for that faith to be justified. Very many taxpayers have grave doubts as to what they wbuld be letting >&*_# Yit J_ * ff..,*fwf4#,*lira -'4 " v^e_aj^______a miMmm "Lmm^m^^pi%$mm themselves in for, others had no reason whatsover to commit themselves to the project. Nevertheless, they appreciated the fact such a system is necessary and regardless of possible higher taxation, voted a substantial "yes". Both ball and bat now rest in the hands of the Regional Board and how capable the hands will be remains to be seen. Initial costs of the scheme will prove substantial and probably far more than has been visualized; water is however, normally a profitable undertaking and should not impose too great a burden upon anyone. Once completed there is no knowing just what prospects face the Sunshine Coast. One significant fact not to be overlooked is that the Regional District is able to bring in facilities previously little more than a day-dream. As pointed out so often in the past it is an official body equipped to directly negotiate with Victoria whereas in the past small groups, with good intentions, invariably gave up their abjectives when it became obvious they were getting no co-operation from ithe provincial government. The co-operation still leaves much to J 057 Owner electors be desired but0a glimmer of light does at least now show through. As a result there is every chance we will embark upon the path of progress which will ultimately lead to an entirely new and prosperous future for the whole area. This, at least, is what most of us look forward tp and indeed expect. Whether it will prove to be so only time will telL 13 per cent eligible votes registered on recent bylaw BSIi] 1 li-Sl IiadlaMg nausea! -tar v^tesi WITHOUT doubt there are Indians living on reserves throughout the country who desperately need assistance, there are also reserves which are a great credit to the residents who for neatness and cleanliness are able to put many white people to shame. Why this contrast should be is something, we do not at this time profess to know. Certainly a great deal is being done for the native Indians of late such as substantial __Lnanrial assistance for purchase of homes, fishboats and equipment etc School in this area, particularly, have adopted a 'policy of integration which is proving worthwhile and a number of local Indians have been employed for some time in responsible positions at the Port Mellon Mill. Indians are employed in other small businesses in the area as well as in St. Mary's Hospital. It must therefore turn the stomaches of many responsible residents to hear those of the leftist element come into the area echoing the rabble rousing American civil rights insurgent's crys of "Discrimination, Red Power and apartheid" That Canadians who claim to wear the cloak of responsibility should spread this insidious indoctrine is bad enough, that they should insult the Indians by looking upon them as being sufficiently gullible to fall for vote seeking patter is (even Fletcher's Philosophy Harry W. Indians not stupid, but it would be absurd to suggest everything is a bed of roses for such is not the case. However, great strides are being made both by the Indian bands and by the Department of Indian Affairs. A big gap certainly remains to be bridged but this will not be accomplished with inflamatory speeches by power hungry politicians who happily throw in with hippies, mili-* tants and anarchist oriented trouble makers- for the soke __L bta_____ng.._,-_es. It takes little imag____ion to visualize the sort of government we would have if elected by people* who are nothing more than dregs of society. We hav. warned in the past that communist infiltration is a very real threat and at this time the wheels of the Kremlin are turning efficiently and with increasinig tempo. Wherever trouble exists the hammer and sickle dominates the scene. It started in the southern United States, spread north and has penetrated Canadian borders. The Viet Nam, Africa, Middle East, Italy, are but a few of the other countries presently in the throes of internal problems behind which lies the guiding hand of Russia. Strangely enough we hear so little from the red banner wavers when big brother Moscow impeaches upon the freedom of small countries seeking escape from the demoralizing domination of the Soviet. It is too bad that any political party should have within its ranks those who care not who or what they discredit providing they obtain their objectives. The only solution lies within the rank and file of the party to erradioate such malcontents before irreparable damage is done. One bad apple in the keg and rot soon sets in. This is happening throughout the western world right now and unless a little sorting out is done soon it is certain the future holds little to look forward to. ^ EOLIKWMG recent success at the polls Sunsi-tiue. 'Opal and placer gold were, ilhe first minerals discovered _nd developed in the, prxmhoe, and although still ; being produced, have long since been surpassed in value hy ^other minerals. The expansion of mineral deve-oipment in recent years has been the result -of new technological adbances in exploration and mining, better transportation and rapdly expanding world markets. "Mineral production in IS? in the province was valued at $386.8 million. The Sullivan mine at __miberley has for many decades overshadowed other developments in the province. The property remains one of the world's most important sources of lead and zinc. Concentrates are processed at Trail, the site of one of the largest lead-zinc smelters in the world. In recent years many outstanding new properties have been developed. .Notable among these are molybdenum properties of Endako, Boss Mountain, B.C.' Molybdenum and Red 'Mountain. Others completed or under way during 1967 include the Westfrob on the Queen Charlottes., brouigh into production at a cost of $40 million as the province's largest iron mine. Granduc mine near Stewart will be in production in late 1989, and is one of the largest copper ore bodies presently known in Canada. The copper-nolyhdenuan property of Brenda Mines, near Peachland is expected to commence production by 1889. Development costs are placed at $80 million. Comincojias reattivaited a mercury property north of Fort St. James, which on completion, will be Canada's -largest mercury producer. The four major metals, copper, zinc, lead and molybdenum, currently represent 40 per cent of the total value of mineral production in the province. Exploration continues to be widespread throughout the province. Most of the properties being explored are low-grade, large-tonnaige deposits, which, if the condition and time are appropriate, may be mined by the open-pit method. The process of locating a property, exploring it, and bringing it into production is slow and expensive. The Japanese haye helped stimulate mining primarily through the advancement of loans and long-term contracts, with some direct investments. Negotiations are completed on trans- portjng coal from the Ferric area to Japan. w__n an expected shipment of two to four million tons annually. This Japanese interest in low-volatile coking-coal has spurred other investigations into the coal resources of the province. Continued interest in exploration plus the success of new tmines being brought mto production indicate that mining will ^on^inue to expand. * , _ - _ Around Gibsons EN THE Anglican Church Parish HaU at a tea held in his honor following the Sunday worship at St. Bartholomew's Church on November 24th, Mr. Allan G. Grocers peel ih&ir eyes for affluent shoplifters A RECENT' survey by Canadian Grocer ,.. disclosed that even the well-to-do are .prone to shoipliftang'that items are not usually taken by down-and-outers but by those who are light-fingered toy nature. iPilferers will take '"pretty near anything," as one chaiij store manager put it. I A prize haul from one supermarket was a 15-lb. ham, a standout compared to the usual "free" shopping by non-paying customers of 'Cigarettes, razor blades; health ' and beauty .aids, flat steaks and canned lobster that escape from .every chain store. Stores prosecute 'shoplifters in relation to ithe gravity .of thc offence, but as a rule pilferers are simply asked to take their business 'elsewhere. In prosecutions, theije is a need for "sub- stantiail .evidence'' that a person Intended to stcql| the item, thus, meaning an arrest can only be made after the person leaves' the store, and then the onus is on the store to'.prove the shopper hadn't merely forgotten to :pi(y. The Canadian .Grocer survey says shoplifting costs probably run to one per cent. Hardest hit Is the drug section, where hair ishnimippos. and toothpaste arc removed from their cartons and the empty boxes replaced on the shelf, Stores which sell can openers 'have double trouble, People steal the openers .to open soft drink bottles or .cans, consume the contents, hide 'the empties, and take the openers home with them. .'
