The Miner was established by John Houston, an outspoken journalist who would later embark on a successful political career, which included four terms as the mayor of Nelson and two terms in the provincial legislature. After leaving the Miner in the summer of 1892, Houston established the Tribune to compete with his former paper. The Miner was published by The Miner Printing and Publishing Company, and the paper's longest-serving editor was D. J. Beaton. The Miner was published under two variant titles, the Nelson Weekly Miner and the Weekly Miner. In 1902, the paper was sold to F. J. HI.(J. The yonr 181X5 has been a memorable one for the town of Nelson and tlie West Kooteiiay district at large and the wonderful progress made during that -period has attracted the keenest interest from all parts of the world. During the year 1895 the West Kootenay district- was in its infancy and capital looked with considerable doubt and apprehension upon any proposition coming from here but the development of the past year has been sufficient to practically demonstrate' that West Kootenay is the richest and most wonderfurminiiigdistrict known in the history of the world. .Miles up- .011 miles of mountains teeming with mineral richness constitute the Kootenay and'although but comparatively few of tbe mines liavo been thoroughly exploited, thousands of good ledges have been opened up *''* "how a'mar- velous amount of wealth. During the year many mines have become regular shipper.-* mid hundreds o" others aie now* preparing to ship in Llie spring. In nearly all cases the returns have exceeded expectations and as a result millions of dollars arc now*ready for investment and development work. The .Nelson district with the great' Hall .Mines was the lirst fo attract the attention of the* public and was followed in succession by Ainswortlu' Slocan, Trail Creek and Lardeau, A large amount of work has.been done in" Hie Nelson district and a0 gie.it many properties have been worked 'during the past year. In the silver camps of Ainsworth and the Slocan. rapid progress has been made and in the Lardeau and Rig Bend the devel- onment has shown gratifying results. Ofthe famous Trail Creole and Holland it is unnecessary; to speak.' Of the new camps much work has been done in, tlie White Grouse .Mountain dist>rict and also"on several claims on Go.it river. Deer Park, liurnt Pass, ".Waterloo and .Montgomery camps were worked Lo a considerable extent : nd a large number of linds were worked, within a radius of 15 miles of Nelson, on .Salmon river. Wild Horse creek and Hall Creek to the south. To the ninth new linds, made on Kolianee and other creeks which head toward Springer and Lemon creek*--, are noted for great richness and a number of properties are being worked. To the west of Nelson a large number of claims have been worked. AN E-WIOUS CONTEMPORARY. The Mixer has no desire to enter into a discussion or indulge in recriminations with the Tribune. In its last issue, however, the Tribune was guilty of a piece of blackguardism unworthy of a newspaper, The use of scurrilous language, as a rule, cminates from persons who have no just claim for recognition and is generally confined to social outcasts or those whose inclinations lead them to voluntarily seek and. consort with low and depraved characters. The Tribune (probably voicing its own sentiments in the matter) says that if the manager of the Nelson Electric Light company had bribed the AIineh with a ten-dollar advertisement that an article referring to an advance in' electric light rates would not have appeared, but upon the other hand would no doubt'have shown that even after the contemplated advance was made the rates in Nelson would be lower than in many other places in the province. We notice that the. Tribune carries an advertisement of land for the manager of the company referred to and we wonder if this is the cause of the Tribune's championship? According to their own argument of the case it would certainly seem so. We are also constrained to ask if the writer of the aclverfcisenient did not also write the editorial. In regard to the publication of the article in Tile Miner, it was a matter of news puro and simple and there was nothing whatever in it that showed a disposition to be revengeful or to injure, anybody. If there has been any injury to the business it lias been through the action of tlie. company and not through the publication" of a fact. As we have said, the article was news pure and simple and even if the company had been advertising it would have been published. Unlike the Tribune, the AIi.neu does not suppress news I'or consideration's of this kmd but gives to the public all the legitimate news that can be gathered. Our contemporary speaks'of loyalty Lo Nelson institutions. Is not the lirst consideration, loyalty on the part of institutions to tbe public ol* Nelson? If an institution voluntarily injures itself;' should a publication of the fact be subject to criticism of the description complained of. A thorough canvass of the town was made, by our solicitor who was in search of advertisements and any one not desiring to patronize the paper was certainly within his rights and those few were treated with courtesy. The little -.meanness-oiltheparb-of-tbe-Tribune is due to its waning popularity and the growing favor with which the people of Nelson are supporting The Mined. We have never in the past taken any notice of the Tribune's liutlo gibes against this paper knowing ,hab (hey simply proceeded from jealously and we do not propose to waste space on it in the future.*' home industry with every safeguard tbat is just and equitable; not to shut out competition and place mine owners in the power or at the mercy of smelting syndicates, but to place all such institutions on [an even basis so that it may be the survival of the fittest. With the completion of tbe Crow's Nest' Pass' road; advanced transportation-facilities, and the opening up of nearby coal fields of almost unknown extent, it is anticipated that many new smelters will be started to treat Kootenay ores. There is a discrimination now" against the British Columbia smelters aud as the matter stands, a premium is being offeved for theestablishinent of smelters below the line.- To overcome the existing difficulty it will be necessary for the government to impose an export duty of one quartei;. of a cent per pound on all lead ores shipped out of this country. The matter, is one of great importance to British Columbia and unless some steps are taken at the next session it may prove a serious drawback during the year 1897. -. We hope Air. Bostock will bring the matter to the attention to the proper Dominion authorities in older that this disability may lie removed at the earliest possible moment.
