The feeling is growing and becoming geneial that inside a year a railway "boom" will occtu' in the Trout Lake district and then the public may prepare to see a' camp that will astonish them. From the numerous inquiries now- being made about the Big Bend country and its mineral resources, especially from Rossland, which is undoubtedly the mining capital ;ind speculative centre of Kootenay, there is but little doubt that the prospects- of that new country are cheerfully hi ight. The Rossland camp, which is already somewhat interested in Big Bend propei ties, counts amongst its people the cream i,if intelligent mining speculators and piarlical operator.*) gathered from mining fields all over the world and put clown together in this latest and perhaps most' int cresting mining camp of the age. The trip, would you believe il, took from August 20 till October 10th, and we walked altokether in that, time' -150 miles, half of which was done with packs. The trail was in such a state that we had to , keep moving backwards'and forwards with om mil fit. On the'27th of August the committee closed down the trail''and I'neu with guns along the route suspended travel till it was cleared and improved. Multiplication and addition were the rules under which they worked; positions were created for favorite:?, friends and supporters. All this is too' .well known now to require more than a passing mention. When the new government took up their duties they found the civil list called for their most sei ions attention, and they put off no time in going through'' it carefully with a view to reduction of the extremely heavy expenditures for this service. Of course it did not take them long to find the civil service bequeathed to them by the Turner government was not such as a wise and judiciously economical government could approve. , Where it was evident work-, was being done that was not necessary, .-ind positions existed which had no good re;ison for their existence, that work w7is immediately stopped and those positions were iniinediately aholished. That work will not, be resinned; those positions will not be again created under the present government. The outcry of the chief organ of Tiirnerisin is quite- unwarranted by the circumstances. We believe the new appointments in the civil service 'will be very few, for the reason that the government . are cutting * down over-expenditures, not emptying positions to till them again, or abolishing one position to make" another. The whole'.workiiig sUlf is to be reduced to reasonable limits, and the fat billets and sinecures done away with. It may suit thh Colonist's purpose to devote a long leading article to this subject, but as it'consisls only of a string of flatulent absurdities it. cannot possibly do any harm or good to anybody.Times.
