Captain Joseph La Barge, one of the early pilots ot the Missouri River, wa« noted (or his courage and during. Itt the winter of 1834 he experienced the following adventure, which i- rei-oided in the "History of Steamboat Navigation oa the Missouri River," by Mr. II. M. Chittenden. He had occasion lo cross tho river, which waa frozen deep. There waa a path across, which ran between two large air-holes through Uu- ice. The weather wag extremely cold, and a blie- lard had already begun Captain La Barge wrapped himself in a blanket coat, held tight to his body by a belt, and was ariiied with a rifle, tomahawk and knife. He felt confident of crossing all right, for the distance was short, and he knew the way so w-all that he felt as if ho could follow :.t blindfolded. In fact, that wns practically hia situation, for th" wind drove the snow into his fnee so violently that it was Impossible to look ahead. Get ting his bearings aa well as he eould. he started on a bIow run in face of the blinding storm. It waa in any ease a reckless performance, considering the existence of tin* air-holes near the prfthi but La Burg? was not given to fearing iutnre dang.'i's nnd forged boldly ahead.' l-'or once his confidence deceived him. All of n sudden he plunged headlong into thc river. He instantly realized that he wns in one of the nil-holes, but which one? If it was the lower one he wns certainly lost, for the swift current had borfti! him under the ice before lie came to th surface. If it wns the upper hole, lo might float to the low-r. He soon rose to the surfnee and bumped the overlying |ee. Sinking an,' rising again, he bumped the ice n seeonii time. The limit ot endurance waa al most reached, when suddenly his head emerged into the open air. Spreading out bib hands, he caught the edge of tin ice. He held on until he could draw hi knife, which he plunged into the ice fa- enough to give him some! long to po' against, nnd after mtiell severe and perl! '•us exertion drew himself out. He hai stuck to his rifle all the time w'ithoii realizing the fact, and i-aine out as lull, n-nied as when he Weill in. But now a tn w peril nivnit. •dm. The storm was at lis heigh he cold intense, nod his cloth'n v.'s drenched thlu'C.'h. The b.' vllloh he bad received hid m hilled tiiin much, for the water wa ivannur than the air outside, and le -i-rlions would have kept, him warn ityw'iy, hut out in the wind the chance vere that he would freeze if he did no iniekly reaeii a lire. Hastily recovering ds bearings, he set mil anew, and hit! he good fortune to reach the post with out further trouble.
