FRIDAY, OCTOBERS. 1923 Notes, Notions and Notables The Alaska boundary line is said to be the longest and straightest surveyed line iu the world. The line consists of a vista of twenty feet wide cut through tall timber, of monuments set at intervisible points not more "han four miles apart, and of a detailed map of the strip of country two miles each side of the boundary. At prominent river crossings, and at main points of travel, the monuments are sectional shafts five feet high, of aluminum bronze, weighiug .300 pounds, set in a ton of concrete. At less important points the monuments are three feet high, set in 1500 pound s of concrete. The commission was five years finishing the task. The boundary runs for 600 miles over great mountain ranges, glaciers, swift rivers, quicksands, bottomless morasses. High summits were crossed, raging torrents forded, camp made on glaciers. Every ob- stable of the wilderness was fought and conquered. It is related of the new premier of Japan, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer, that interrupted by the terrors of the recent great earthquake, in which the building in which he was organizing his cabinet collapsed, he calmly moved to another building and proceeded with his work. We can not do thiugs in that way. We refuse to be deliberate. We live fast, and each day we are living faster. We are indifferent to the use of brakes. In the expressive vernacular, we "step on it," and think we are speeding in the way of superior accomplishment. This is abnormal. There is no nesd for the mad haste of the western world-haste in businesss, in industry, iu the pursuit of pleasure. Grain, Hay Flour and Feed Lime and Salt Cement and Plaster Poultry Supplies Cold storage systems have revolutioned the provision trade and the element of waste deplorable in by gone days has largely been eliminated. In Britain there is something like twenty-five million cubic feet of cold storage space available, and it is said that twenty million eggs and one hundred and fifty thousand tons of meat may be found in cold stor age in London alone. But eggs and meat are not the only items which are commonly kept in cold storage for longer of briefer periods. Fabrics of all kinds, furs and silks, are kept there. Then vegetables and dowers are kept in cold storage. Flowers .and fruit can be brought from Canada, Australia and New Zealand in refrigerating chambers. An Indian legend says that the Grand Canyon of Colorado was made single handed by Pack-itha a wi, who was armed with a large flint knife and a big stick. Once upon a time the world was covered so deep with water that nobody knew what to do until Pack-i- tha-a-wi took the initiative. The knife he thrust deep into the heart of the earth, ham mering until the canyon was formed. Am other legend says that there was a great chief who mourned the death of his wlfe.Tavwoats. One of rhe Indian gods came to him and told him his wife was in a happier land, and offered to take lum there that he might see for himself if, upon his return, he would cease to mourn. The great chief promised. Then Tav- woats made a trail through the mountains. Then he rolled a river into the gorge so broad and raging tliat it would engulf any that might attempt to enter therebs, French coffee, Turkish coffee, Russian coffee, all have had their vogue among those who are constantly seeking the bizarre; but in "All About f!(jffee" is found a recipe which should be weird enough to satisfy anyone's taste. It is "Judge" Walter llumsey's "new and superior way of making coffee" as given in 1657. "Yon must take equal quantity of Butter and Sallet oyle, melt them well together, but not boyle them. Then stirro them well that they may incorporate together. Then melt therewith three times as much Honey, and stirre it well together. Add thereunto powder of Turkish Cophie, to make it Electuary." Butter, salad oil, honey, and coffee mixed! The newepaper, says the Florida Times Union, gives an accurate picture of the times When you read a newspaper, remember that the things that you read there are the things that the greatest number of people are interested in, and that in future generations, when the people of that far distant day desire to know how you lived, what your ideals and am bitions were, what things you attach most value to, they will look over the files of the newspapers. If you desire the nowspapers to show to coming generations that this generation is one of lofty ideals, ihat home life is sacred, that a man is valued for what he holds in his heart and in his head, rather than for wqat he holds in the bank, that rests with you.
