And equally acceptable will be donations in cash from other interested citizens to make it possible to acquire the necessary quantity of apples for which the board anticipates having to pay market prices. A good example in this connection has been set by C. O. Rodgers who is giving the boxes, with a specially printed label that will inform the thousands of visitors to the fair the locality from whence the display comes. If further evidence were required as to the soundness of investing money in dyking Kootenay Flats lands surely the finest kind of testimony of the sort is this week furnished by the landowners in Drainage District No. 10, between Porthili and Copeland, where all arrangements have been completed for the reclamation of another 2000-acre tract. This newest district is tn very close proximity to District No. 8- whens quite serious trouble was encountered in June when part of the dyke which was constructed through tbe Jerome slough went out with disastrous results to the farmers in No. 0 District. In the light of this unfortunate occurrence, if the farmers in No. 10 are willing to tackle dyking at this early dale surety llizvc can be -o room for argument as to such projects being the vtfy best of good business. Penticton is Hopeful We are all waiting for a good fall. Soft fruit prices are high and indications point to a healthy return for tne apple crop. Meantime, business conditions ate inclined to be dull. For one thing* tbe cannery payroll for three months,.at about $12,000 a montb is missing. Cannery workers spent a good deal of money in the stores and amusement places of town. The fruit packing houses have so far worked on about half the staffs used last season for the 1926 heavy crop. Possibly this proportion may not be exactly correct but at all events there were more packing house employees in Penttcton last year than there are Uiis season. Last year saw several hundred fire fighters in the hills around Pentlcton. and the amount expended for groceries and men's clothing was comider- amc. We are thankful of course that tbe fires are reduced this season to date and wc are pleased alco that ihs ffruij crop will apparently bring big returns to the, farmers. After all, it isjbetter to have the man on the land make the money, than the man in .he cannery ar pack- ing house, if there is not enough for botb. Meantime, we look forward to a good Fall.Penticton Herald. The Free Press is of the opinion tlaat W. R.
