The'Coast News Thursday April 12 1951 In His True m mm ' MAIN STUMBLING block on the right of way for ear ferry service between Horseshoe Bay and Powell River has been overcome and mainly due to the untiring, and unstinting efforts of B.M. Let no. man believe the legislative, green light was given without much hard work on the part of many, some for it and some against it, but standing above them all, handling the pawns of negotiation with the sure touch of a veteran chess player was %our member of the assembly. Strong opposition sprang up-from the west shore. It seems that-West Vancouver has trouble operating its own transport services and has made a fizzle out of its.fire brigade efforts not to mention the mess they are in with the hospital question, yet they find much time to tell everyone else'how to operate their business. We hope this is water under the bridge now. But the opposition born of that municipality's faculty of not minding its3\"own affairs could easily have frightened a lesser man - it frightened* the majority of the 12 man private bills committee. A man of smaller stature* would have failed miserably when he faced the Coalition caucus, charged with selling the whole idea to the strongest group in the political horizon. There were men'there who were against the ear ferry, there were men there who wanted changes in the wording, there were also members who disliked the 25. year and the expropriation clause. There were-none who disliked the ear ferry proponent and therein, lies our member's strongest point. Cast back and remember the opportunity given Batt to stand on the floor of the h>ouse and, with sword' waving high and sparks flying from him in righteous indignation, denounce the government for its foolishness in the*hospital stand. My application was forwarded to the District Post Office Inspector at Vancouver, B.C. In turn advice was received advising position would be advertised for applications by. the. Civil Service Commission and this would be. an open competition to all applicants, also statingg preference given to applicants with residential qualifications, overseas veterans, educational and general suitability. Of course including other qualifications. It was not until November 2 1950 did the Liberal Association of Sechelt know of my interest in this direction and it was only through pressure being put to bear on Dr McColL re health re-action of the Postmaster's Assistant and a request that something be done to relieve this burden. At that time Dr McColl telephoned, the Sechelt Liberal Association President and immediately an executive meeting was held whereby the secretary was instructed to write a letter to our 'federal member, as this apparantly seemed to be an urgent matter at tha& time, endorsing my. name which I accepted as a v$ry high compliment.
