ATLIN LAKE LUMBER CO. Trougliton &. Ridd, Proprietors, Special Rates on al! Contract Orders CUT RATES. See us for A, C. Hi',s*ciiKiii,D, Manager. After a lapse of practically two years a Deputy Sheriff has at last been appointed. Mr. John K. Shirley, of Atlin, received notification from R. D. flail, Sheriff of ihe Count}'of Vancouver, that he was pleased to appoint him as his Deputy for this section of the county. The appointment dates from the 3rd inst. The position of Sheriff is al best no sinecure, but we feel assured that Mr. Shirley's appointment will meet with favor from all classes of the community, and for zealous.attention to duty we know of no one better qualified lo occupy the position than our esteemed citizen, Mr. J. K. Shirley. Summer Excursions. We are advised by the Local Agent of the W...F. & Y. Ry., that a series of summer excursions on the lake will shortly be inaugurated. For more beautiful or diversified scenery there is no place on the continent which can rival Atlin lake. Last year these excursions were well patronized, especially by Atlin people, aud as they will generally be held on Sundays, we very strongly recommend the miners on the creeks to avail themselves of these enjoyable outings. The Blue Canyon section of Spruce cieek has beeii a little too difficult of access for our representative to make a personal visit, owing' principally to the limited leisure time \"at his disposal, but to the kindness of Mr. Letherdale we are indebted for the following interesting information : A scene of-astonishing activity, prevails in the Blue Canyon district on Spruce creek, and in spite of,ihe lateness of the snow to disappear from this high altitude, much good work has .been accomplished. There . are nearly 100 men alwpfk on claims adjacent to the property- of the Blue Canyon Company. Upon the claim's'immediately below this ground a number of the owners combined aud they are putting' in a drain ditch, paralleling the creek, and have-now gained- adYti* feet: . Pay. has been struck, so from now on the dead work may- be -said'to be finished. It is contemplated thai a depth of 14 feet will have to be attained to furnish sufficient drainage for the ground. - The present bedrock as exposed seems to be clay, and' upon this very rich pay is found, as may be readily imagined from one example, On McNairns's claim, for 5 hours' shovelling, with three men 17 ozs. 6 dwts. were won last Saturday af- noon. This' pay was taken off the clay bedrock, under 6 inches of water.\" On the Brown Bros, ground, an overshot wheel has been erected, which .works like a charm,-and at 14 feet it keeps the floor as dry as a board. They were independent of a drain and have allowed the others a right of way-through their ground fer 25 per cent of' the gold won from the strip. - This ground is situated on a long . narrow swamp, with steep banks on either side ; the flat does not exceed r.-io feet in width, and the creek, which skirts the north bank, is about 6 feet wide and averages betwe.cn 12 and iS inches of depth. The grade is very slight and for the 7 feet gained in depth in the drain over quarter of a mile has had to he dug. At the moment it is un- . known whether or not the clay forms the true bedrock or not, but in the writer's opinion it would not be at all .surprising if a similar condition of affairs was found lo exist as was found ou the correspondin\" location of Otter creekjust over the divide, where the clay was Continued on p. 4. alUtUetrminiVKiJf* yr- \">-*lw*****W-lb!'Afc-Ufl'i3M.Ti &fZ^^'*llW\"!tfHUoAl ifl.tf.Tt-.ntt.'j .rptr-xtzi-Jn ,>'$VS,'y-**_*ra?,t<.:Kl itf/jr;;^, ?cVT\"^rr77*T*fl*Ww---t.-( ^ *xj i^efsxtmwD^s^^KssR ATLIN, B.C.. Saturday, July .'2, 1902. It is not often tin I our attention is called to errors of judgment on the part of Ihe Do-minion Government, but 'in our last issue we quoted an extract from an Official circular, dated, June, 171I;, in which the announcement was made that the parcel postage rate from, and to any part of the Dominion to Atlin and the Yukon would be doubled, and in this we consider wc have ground's for complaint. \"In refening lo the notice, we stated that this order was \"extraordinary and unprecedented,\" in- as-much-as a discrimination is made in the postal rates to and from this 'northern country with other parts of. the Dominion. We have no hesitation in denouncing the policy as a gross injustice lo the people of this portion of the country, while it gives an advantage to other countries, within the International Postal Union, as against trading with Canadian merchants, whom it] ought to be the policy of the Government to support and encourage. We would not have thought so much 'about the increase in the rates had the order been made to apply (.luring the winter months, say from the closing till the opening of navigation, but as it stands, wc consider it an inio uitous piece of business. As the Parcels Post is used by the greater majority of the permanent residents of this district, and as these are .already heavily taxed, this double rate seriously affects them.' It is to be hdperl some steps will be taken by local authorities to induce the Postmaster General to rescind his reccik order before any haidship is wrought. MINING DEAL. COUNTY COUR' Legal Tangles Being \"Slowly Unravelled. Very Littlo Interest Manifested. , Willow Creek Ditch Case Still In Statu Quo\". From the quiet prevailing around the Court House' it is very evident that the seeds of discord have withered and died, as there hardly seems to be salt far' less a lull meal for tlie lawyers, or maybe it is the benign influence of Judge Henderson dial has to do with the small- ne.-js of the County Cotut docket. His Honour, Judge Henderson has been in Atliii for over a month . and there have been practically :io. new cases entered: A few of those old stand-bys from ^last year have come'up for final settlement, but even the litigants in these do not seem to want to press for immediate \"settlement, as the ca*;e.s are being adjourned ' froin time to time,- 011 one pretext and another. The case of Barnes vs. Ruffner, in which the- plaintiff sues for damages done by .defendant on a claim on Pine creek. From the evidence produced the plaintiff could not substantiate his claim, and judgment was- in consequence given against him with costs. Li the\" case of Harris vs. Felher- stonhaugh, judgment was given lo the defendant. This was in its way rather a peculiar case and was one iu which plaintiff seeks to have his title confirmed as against that of the defendant. C. Dubois Mason, as solicitor for the defense, claimed that the plaintiff should first prove the validity of his own title before questioning that of the defendant. The evidence showed that the claim was staked by Harris tinder a power of attorney and that application'was made to record the claim which was called the \" Intruder,\" together wilh the power of attorney at the same lime. These applications the Mining Recorder refused to accept on the grounds that had the record of the previous owner run out, the claim would\" have fallen into the possession of the owners of the bedrock flume. Two suits, Plum be vs. the Atlin Lake Mining Co, entered ,in the docket, were settled out of Court. These were, an action for wages and one for damages for wrongful dismissal. The Willow Creek ditch case has occupied the attention of the Court off aud 011 for the last three weeks. It will iu all probability be argued, pro and con, before Judge Henderson next week. The Judge has familiarized himself with all the details and has spent considerable time on the ground to satisfy,him-- self as to the different interests involved. As a further argument^ it is a well known fact that Spruce creek carries two distinct runs of gold. Upon the Blue Canyon Co.'s property, development work, under Mr. Letheruale's management, is being pushed with a vim. Seven men are al work. The bedrock flume, has , beeu extended So feel, considerable ground-sluicing on the upper benches and three open cuts run from the creek edge. The prospects all over the ground are satisfactory and highly encouraging. The best pay is found adjacent to the creek and it is surmised that the creek bed will be found to be rich. It is the intention of the company to turn the creek into one of the open cuts and wash out the channel. Tbe company has a large area of excellent ground, which 'will undoubtedly yteld substantial profits for years to come.' This is a close corporation, there are no sleeping- partners and no high-salaried officials to support. We commend the company for its enterprise and sincerely ' hope unqualified success will crown its efforts. We are glad to learn, that the wagon road is being built from the Columbia Hydraulic Co. to. the Blue Canyon, a distance of nearly live miles, which will, -when completed, be of inestimable value to the miners of this latter section. Hitherto, everything has had to be packed, either by mule or by man a tedious and expensive means of transportation iu any event.
