Yesterday morning at 9.30 A. M. a fire started in the lower town of Phoenix that looked as if it might destroy the entire citv. Fighting thb Firk. For a time no water was obtainable, as the city tire supply has long been dry. Hose connections were e- ventually made with the large tanks at the Granby .nine, into which water is pumped from the deeper workings, but not until the flames had gotten a goo start. Two hotels were burned to the ground and a barbershop badly scorched before the fire was pt*t under control late in the afternoon. Probable Eosses. The total losses will likly exceed $30,000.00. on which there is only a- bout $2,000.00 insurance. The Brooklyn Hotel which was the largest of the doaen or more hotels in Phoenix, was burnt first. It was a three story building 36X65 feet in size, and contained 30 rooms. Mr. E. P. Shea was the proprietor. At the time of the fire the Brooklyn contained o- ver $3,000.00 worth of liquor, none of which was saved. The hotel was insured for $2,000.00 and was totally destroyed. The Phoenix Hotel was valued at a- bout $8,000.00. It had no insurance and was a total loss. , The barber shop was not seriously damaged. Forced to Leave.
