Brief Account of Work Done—Reci-

- Greater Princeton.
[Concluded from last week.]
The Princeton board of trade was or
ganized Nov. 28, iQQ^.p.MrE. Thomas,
president;' and was the first to be'-Jtah-r
UsEed i^big^Siij^t^aiBfeen electoral d s
trict. One of.the first"propositions!for
t__Tb'oard to uudertake was the eitensicn
of the Dominion telephone line from
Nicola t,o,Pen_.ctan, thus linking Prince
ton and'Other -Similkatneenf'points with
the outsMe, world_^How. _u£cess__i-__e.
efforts of the board were is novv attested
by the fact that a continuous circuit of
500 miles is now in operation and. the
important towns of Simjl,kameen, Nicola.
Kamloops an,d Okanogan districts are
connected, with an__verage total of about
5000 -Hessages per month-- As a result of
the board's long agitation for telephohe
extension it. is evident that unless we
ask persistently and urgently, for public
needs, imp.ovements and reforms there
is slight :chance of obtaining anything,
such is tne present system of government
a_d the well nigh useless official known
ajs inspector, whose chief .'duty' seems to.
be . pposrtion'to progress and remedy, ft
Princeton to Vancouver.
The board pressed upon both'govern
ments the necessity for a coast to Kootenay railway, a large petition being circulated for that purpose Bnd forwarded to
the proper authorities. I may suggest
that,It triay yet become the duty of thig-
board to prigiqate another 'petition^to
have the V.,V. & E. completed from
Princeton to Vancouver, For, not until
this linkvis welded cati Princeton or any
otbver'town along .'the proposed line re
ceive the measure of prosperity to which
if can fairly lay claim.
1/ Taxes Gome Back.
In' regard to street improvements
the board took this riiatter up in recent
years, advocating a reasouable return for
the taxes collected. At first this proposal met with slight opposition,by some
who argued that the government had no
right to improve the streets of any town.
Thanks t4'■'_. W.'Shatford, M.P.P., the
broader view prevailed, the people were
accorded,their rights a,nd good highwajs
resulted. 1
Improve Breed of Horses.
• The efforts ' of the board to have the
ranges of the Similkameen rid of wild
horses has met with general approval and
that nuisance has almost disappeared.
The establishment of an experimental
horse breeding station in this section
where grazing a.nd climatic conditious
are>most favorable for a high type of
_iorsenas been advocated b# the'b6ard
and this important matter only requires
frequent periodical resuscitation to ensure
success- (X^^^l

for governmental consideration. The
people pay for good service and proper

Princeton.
Reciprocity, Proper Thing.
The board in 1903 took np the question of reciprocity with the United
States and I am glad to say that negotiations now in progress point to an early
solution of this great international prob*
lem. I can only recommend to the board
favorable consideration of this question
as tending toward the ultimate goal-
universal free trade and universal peace.
Apart from the high moral sentiment
involved in it the business phase of it
has to be considered with refereuce to the
greater good to the greater number. It
is the board's privilege to strengthen the
negotiations now under way by resolution and to take for its guide the lofty
example set for alienations and peop]__r
by free trade Britain.
Conservation of our forests has demanded the attention of the board, sug
gestions from it having been passed on
to the proper authorities
Trunk Road and Trails.
The importance of the interprovincial
trunk road has engaged the aitention of
the board and a resolution urging its
early completion was passed ; also the
trail to Steamboat and road to Whipsaw
have received the attention which their
importance demauds and work is expected to begin as soon as possible, affording means of travel for the expected inrush of prospectors to the goldfields.
The board has already issued pamphlets
descriptive of Princeton district, but further publicity on a large scale is now
necessary if full advantage is to be
