The J.S.U.T.C. had presented a recommendation < that the Conmittee on Military Education be discharged and its functions transferred to the J.S.U.T.C. Carried Curriculum Changes, 1946-47 Faculty of Arts and Science At a meeting held on October 9th, 1946, the following changes in courses were approved and recommended to 1258 October 23, 1946. Senate to take effect in the present Session: (a) That beginning with the present session Psychology 100 be made equivalent to Psychology 101 and that students who have previously credit for Psychology A be not required to take Psychology 101 in order to qualify for further courses in Psychology, and That Psychology 200, 201, 202, 300 and 301 be considered as Third and Fourth year courses open also to students in Second Year. (b) That Geography 407, Human and Cultural Geography be changed from a one-unit to a three-unit course. (c) That Plant Physiology (advanced) or advanced Agronomy be accepted in place of Chemistry 3 in the course leading to the degree of B.A. in Biology, Forestry option. (d) That the following new courses be authorized in the Department of Zoology: Zoology 405 - Fisheries Technology - A course of seminars, laboratory exercises and demonstrations in the handling, preparation, preservation and processing of fish. Practical work is given with the co-operation of the staff of the Pacific Fisheries Experimental Station and certain members of the research staffs of the fishing companies. Classes are held in the laboratories of these institutions. The course is open to students in the Commerce and Fisheries Option and may be taken by other students only with the permission of the head of the department. Four hours a week, First term. Mr. Hoar l£ units. Zoology 406 - Parasitology - A general course dealing with the classification, morphology and life histories of animal parasites affecting domestic and wild animals and man. Two lectures and four hours laboratory a week, times to be arranged. Second term. Mr. Adams - 2 units. (e) That the following new course be authorized in the Department of French: French 504 - Some Aspects of French Classicism (The content of the course to be left to Dr.Ashton) 3 units. * 1259 October 23, 1946. 9 In accordance with the resolution of Senate the following courses in Slavonic Studies have been agreed upon beginning with the present Session: Russian 90 - Beginners' Russian - 3 units. Dean Buchanan) ' Mr. Gage ) That these changes in courses and new courses effective in the present session be approved. ■■» Carried Faculty of Applied Science '' At a meeting held on October 10th, 1946, the follow ing changes in courses were approved and recommended to Senate: t (a) That, beginning with the present Session, Mathematics 304 be substituted for Mathematics 303 in the course in Engineering Physics. 3 (b) That the following Graduate Courses in Mechanical A Engineering be introduced to be given in alternate , ^ years, beginning with M.E. 56l in the present Session: M.E. 56I - Advanced Applied Mechanics. This course deals with the various problems of stress analysis of interest to machine designers. V The behaviour of actual material in machines will also be considered \\vith emphasis being placed on plasticity and creep effects, fatigue or endurance f properties, and impact and dynamic effects. The laboratory period is utilized for problems and computations, and experimental methods of stress analysis. Textbook: Timoshenko - "Strength of Materials", Part I and II - Van Nostrand. Two one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory period per week. - 3 units. Given in 194 6-4 7 and alternate years. Mr.Richmond. * M.E.565 - Mechanical Vibrations This course will continue the study of mechanical - vibrations started in M.E. 465, and will consider i the vibration of elastic bodies, engine dynamics and torsional vibrations, self excited vibrations, \\ g^ vibration of non-linear systems and other subjects W of interest in machine design. Two one-hour lecture periods and one three-hour laboratory period per week. - 3 units Given in 1947-48 and alternate years. Mr.Richmond. In accordance with action by Senate and Board of Governors the following courses have been provided in the Department of Architecture beginning with the present Session: Architecture 150 - Principles of Architecture - 2 units. Architecture 152 - Architectural Drawing - 2 units. It has been decided, subject to approval by Senate, that the requirements for admission to the First Year of the course in Architecture should be the same as for the Engineering Courses in Applied Science and that the First Year of the course in Architecture should be the same as in Engineering except that Architecture 150 and 152 should replace C.E.150 and M.E.152. Carried Faculty of Agriculture At a meeting held on October 12th, 1946, the following new course was approved and recommended to Senate: Animal Husbandry 316 - Fundamentals of Fur Farming. The development of fur farming in Canada together with the origin and improvement under domestication of the various species of animals suitable for fur production. Selection of ranch sites, suitable lay-outs, buildings and equipment. Fur farm management practices including: (a) Breeding, rearing of young, feeding, priming and pelting. Carried Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries Mr. Gage, Chairman of the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries, presented a report on the awards for the year ending October, 1946. Mr. Gage ) Dean Curtis) That this report be accepted. Carried Mr. Gage presented the report of the Scholarships Committee on the Special bursaries awarded in September, 1946. Mr. Gage ) Dean Curtis) That this report be accepted. Carried Mr. Gage also presented the report of the Scholarship Committee on the Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Bursaries and Provincial Loan Fund. Mr. Gage ) Dean Curtis) That this report be accepted. Carried Mr. Gage announced that the following further postponements in connection with scholarship awards had been recommended by the Committee on Prizes and Scholarships and authorized by the Faculty concerned: Faculty of Arts and Science 1. Kenneth G. Booth (Lefevre Scholarship, 1941-42) - * 1262 October 23, 1946. that postponement be granted for one more year only. Mr. Booth, who enlisted in 1942, has never requested postponement and his address is unknown. 2. Aubrey Tanner (anonymous bursary for special proficiency] - That postponement for one year be granted. The donor had approved the request that the funds be conserved towards heavier expenses at medical school next year. Faculty of Applied Science George C. 3est (B.C. Electric Railway Company Research Scholarship, 1945) - that Mr. Best be asked to give a definite answer as to whether or not he intends to return; if so, that the scholarship be held for him for one more year only; otherwise, the donors be asked to donate the sum for special equipment. For the information of Senate Mr. Gage read the following announcement regarding scholarships that had been relinquished: Faculty of Arts and Science Joan A. Richards - has relinquished the Lefevre Scholarship awarded in May, 1946, as she is not returning to the University. No recommendation of another recipient has been made by the Department. Faculty of Applied Science David Rose - relinquished the B.C. Electric Scholarship for Electrical Engineering as he is not proceeding v/ith that course. The award goes to the next highest candidate - Donald J. Evans. New Awards and Changes Mr. Gage, Chairman, presented the recommendation of the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries that the offer of the British Columbia Sugar Refining Company Limited Scholarships be accepted on the following terms of award: 1263 October 23, 1946. The British Columbia Sugar Refining Company Limited Scholarships Scholarships to the total of $2,500.00, the gift of the British Columbia Sugar Refining Company Limited, are available annually for students in Agriculture, Bacteriology, Botany and Biology, Chemistry, Fisheries, Home Economics, and Zoology. Awards are open to graduate students, or undergraduates entering the final year of their course. Winners of these awards will be selected by the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships, and Bursaries from recommendations submitted by the Departments concerned. Selection will be made on the basis of scholastic standing and promise of ability in research. Mr. Gage ) Mr. Forward) That these scholarships be accepted and a letter of thanks sent to the donor. Carried In accordance with the wishes of the donor the inclusion of the following clause was recommended in the terms of the W. D. Shaffer Bursary: "That the award may be made to a student in any year in any Faculty if there is no qualified applicant in the Teacher Training Course". Carried Mr. Gage presented the recommendation of the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries that the offer of the Toronto General Trusts Corporation to present a prize to the Faculty of Law be accepted on the following terms of award: The Toronto General Trusts Corporation Prize Through the generosity of the Toronto General Trusts Corporation, a prize of $30, to be used in > 1264 October 23, 1946. the purchase of Law books, will be available for students in the Faculty of Law. This prize will be awarded to the student who, in the final examinations, obtains highest standing in the subject of Wills. Carried Mr. Gage, on behalf of the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries recommended the acceptance of the offer of Mr. H. H. McDougall to provide a bursary of $1000.00 to assist a worthy student to continue his course, the selection to be made by the Scholarship Committee. Mr. McDougall requested that no newspaper publicity be given this gift. Mr. Gage ) Dean Finlayson) That this bursary be accepted and a letter of thanks sent to the donor and that the donor's wishes regarding no publicity be respected. Carried On behalf of the members of Senate the President expressed deep appreciation of the work done by the Committee on Prizes, Scholarships, and Bursaries. Carried Honorary Degrees Dr. Sedgewick, Chairman, presented a recommendation of the Committee on Honorary Degrees that the Degree of D.Sc. be conferred on Dr. Wilder Penfield who has been invited to give the Congregation Address at the Autumn Congregation. Carried Dr. Sedgewick ) Mr. MacCorkindale) That the President be authorized to write the Honourable John Hart to ascertain whether he would accept the Honorary Degree of LL.D. at some future Congregation convenient to him. Carried Memorial Minutes The following tribute to the memory of Mr. John Williams Spencer who died on June 18th, 1946, was read by Dr. Sedgewick, Chairman of the Committee on Memorial Minutes: "The Senate expresses its sense of loss in regretfully recording the death of a valued member of its body, Mr. John Williams Spencer of Victoria - a man of beneficent public spirit and a warmly sympathetic supporter of University interests." > > 1266 October 23, 1946. Lighthall expressing appreciation of his appointment as Emeritus Professor. An acknowledgement of Senate's decision to discontinue courses offered through the Canadian Legion Educational Services was received from that organization together with an expression of appreciation of the correspondence courses and facilities offered the armed services by the University during the* war. A letter was received from the Superintendent of Education regarding the distribution of University jmtrance and Senior Matriculation Scholarships with the recommendation that the Province of British Columbia be re-zoned to allow a more equitable allocation of scholarships. Mr. MacCorkindale) Mr. Gage ) That the report be approved. Carried A recommendation was received from the Faculty of Arts and Science that Dr. E. W. Du Vail be made a member of that Faculty during the period of his appointment as Lecturer in Sociology, replacing Dr. Topping on leave of absence. Lord) Dr. Sedgewick) That the Statute of Senate regarding membership in the Faculties be referred to the Faculties for reconsideration and recommendation. Carried In view of certain problems which had arisen concerning fraternity residences, the President suggested that a committee be formed to deal with problems in connection with Fraternities and Sororities. Mr. Sedgewick) Mr. Gage ) That the President be empowered to form a committee to deal with Fraternity and Sorority relations with the University. Carried Dean Finlayson brought forward for discussion various criticisms levelled at the University concerning the number of new courses and departments being established during the present period of increased enrolment. The matter was discussed at some length but no action taken.
