He stated that the Faculty was opposed to a policy permitting the beginning of a course as late as three weeks after the start of classes and recommended that students entering science courses be required to do so within two weeks of the beginning of lectures. The Faculty also recommended that Science students be permitted to drop courses within the first month of lectures without penalty. (b) Course and curriculum changes (See Appendix 'B') (c) Proposed revision of the Combined Biology and Chemistry Honours Programme The Agenda Committee had recommended that the above proposals be referred to the Senate Curriculum Committee. It was agreed, however, that since the changes were minor ones Senate should take immediate action. Carried A brief discussion followed concerning proposals referred to the Senate Curriculum Committee. The Chairman of Senate agreed 5444 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 Proposals of the Faculties (continued) to establish a President's Committee to set out policy for dealing with minor curriculum changes. There was general agreement that minor curriculum changes could be approved by Senate without prior reference to the Curriculum Committee. However changes of this nature should be subject to challenge by the Curriculum Committee or by individual members of Senate. It was also felt that in cases of changes in course descriptions it would be helpful if Faculties submitted both the original and revised versions. Moreover, the reasons for any changes should be provided. A further query was raised concerning the possibility of offering regular winter session courses during the May-July Intersession without the customary approval of Senate. It was pointed out that should additional courses be suggested for offering in the Intersession this year there would be no opportunity for obtaining Senate approval before the beginning of the session. Dr. Gibson ) That the Committzz oh dzans bz authorizzd, Dr. Norris ) h0K this yzar only, to rulz on thz ohhering oh additional courses during thz Intersession, The motion was put and carried. 5445 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 Request for staff representation on Senate The Chairman explained that a request had been received from the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local No. 116, for representation on Senate. In amendment: Dean Finn ) That thz second szntznez "And fp^Xhzr ... valid" Mr. Trevino ) be dzlztzd. Dean Finn felt that it would be an unnecessary waste of time to debate the second sentence before it had been determined whether the request was legally valid. The amendment was carried. The motion as amended was carried. In response to a query as to the findings of the committee established in November to consider a proposal of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration in connection with student membership in that Faculty, the Chairman stated that the University's solicitors had reported that a student could not legally be considered a member of Faculty. Proposals of Senate members The Secretary read to Senate the following motion which had been submitted by Dr. Warren: 5446 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 Proposals of Senate members (Continued) "Whzrzas thz protection oh our environment has become a matter hor gznzral concern, bz it rzsolvzd that thz Chairman oh Sznatz be askzd to namz a small committzz to makz a study oh the courses now ohhcrzd at this University which bzar upon the problems oh pollution and oh thz research in progress in these hields, with a view to co-ordinating such inhormation and idzntihying both areas o{ strength and possible lacunaz in thz ovzrall pattzrn oh both research and instruction". It was pointed out that the President's Committee on Pollution had filed a report at the November 18, 1970 meeting of Senate, at which time it had been agreed that the committee be asked to continue to report to Senate from time to time. It was felt that the existing committee on pollution could deal with this motion. Dean Finn ) That the motion be rzherrzd to thz President's Dr. Norris ) Committzz on Pollution hor possiblz inclusion in a hoXurz rzport oh thz committzz. Carried Other Business A query was raised regarding the addition of new student senators to the various Senate committees. The Chairman stated that this would not be overlooked. Mr. Smolensky gave notice that he planned to present a resolution for consideration at the May meeting of Senate relating to the organization of the University as presently prescribed by the Universities Act. The Chairman asked Senate to join him in congratulating Dr. Malcolm F. McGregor on being awarded an Honorary Degree by Acadia University. Senate was also advised that one of its former members, Dr. Harold Copp, had been elected a fellow of the Royal Society, and that Dean Cowan of the Faculty of Graduate Studies was to receive an honorary degree from the University of Alberta. 1971. 5447 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. The next regular meeting of Senate will be held on Tuesday, May 18, yyWlfax\\/u~cc>LC \\J Secretary Confirmed, Chairman 5448 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 »A» APPENDIX 'A New Award Recommended to Senate The Canadian Society of Animal Production Book Prize This prize, the gift of the Canadian Society of Animal Production, will be awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences to an outstanding student in the graduating class in one of the fields of Animal Science, Poultry Science, Nutrition or Food Science. 5449 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 • tj« APPENDIX 'B Course and Curriculum changes FACULTY OF ARTS Extension Credit courses May - July, 1971 Political Science 200 The Government of Canada Political Science 202 Contemporary Ideologies FACULTY OF EDUCATION Extension Credit courses - 1971-72 ON CAMPUS Education 400 Philosophy of Education Education 407 Introduction to the study of exceptional children Education 425 Art Education (formerly Education 305) Education 430 History of Education Education 431 Primary Learning Disabilities (l*s) (first term) Education 436/437 Behavior Disorders/Teaching Maladjusted Children Education 470 Educational Sociology Education 472/473 Developmental reading - Theoretical/Practical Elementary Grades Education 478 Teaching English as a second language Education 480 Advanced Studies in the Language Arts in the Intermediate Grades Education 494 (l*s) Film Study and Film Study Course Design for Schools (2 sections, first and second term) Education 495 (1*5) Still Photography in Education (first term) Education 496 (l*s) Motion Picture Production in Education (second term) Fine Arts 100 Introduction to the Plastic and Graphic Arts (formerly F.A. 300) Fine Arts 401 Painting I Fine Arts 307/407/417 Graphic Arts I/Graphic Arts Il/Graphic Arts III General Science 309 General Science for Elementary School Teachers (2-3 sections) 5450 Wednesday, April 28, 1971 APPENDIX 'B' Course and Curriculum changes FACULTY OF EDUCATION Extension Credit courses - 1971-72 (Continued) OFF CAMPUS Education 331, 332, 334, 336, 390, 403 (1*5), 425 (formerly 305), 431 (1%), 460, 470, 472/73, 479, 488 (1*5), General Science 309.
