Thursday, December 31st, 1951
A special meeting of the Senate of The University
of British Columbia was held on Thursday, December 51st,
1931, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair),
Dean F. M. Clement, Dean R. W. Brock, Dean D. Buchanan,
Dr. G. G. Moe, Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Mr. H. F. Angus, Dr.
A. H. Hutchinson, Mr. G. W. Clark, Rev. Dr. W. H. Vance,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Mrs. Beatrice Wood and Dr. C. Killam.
The Secretary read the call of the meeting:
1. Reports of the Faculties in reference to
Christmas examinations.
2. Recommendation of Ceremonies Committee re
new form of diploma for Arts degrees.
An expression of regret at his inability to attend
the meeting was received from Mr. Sherwood Lett.
CHRISTMAS EXAMINATION RESULTS
FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCE
Dean Buchanan presented a summary of the Christmas
examination results for the First and Second Years in
Arts and Science, together with recommendations that
certain students whose work was unsatisfactory be required to discontinue attendance for the remainder of
the session.
The recommendations of the Faculty of Arts and
Science in reference to students of the First and
Second Years were considered separately, and on motions
of Dean Buchanan seconded by Mr. Angus, were adopted.
Dr. Killam stated that he had -b-e-e-n--i-n-for-me-d that heard
trick questions had been set in certain subjects of the rumors
Christmas examinations. Dean Buchanan was requested to (Feb.17,'3
report on this matter. 181.

FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCE
Dean Brock presented a summary of the Christmas
examination results in Applied Science, including Nursing,
together with recommendations that certain students whose
work was unsatisfactory be required to discontinue
attendance for the remainder of the session and that the
standing of certain other students be referred to the
Dean with power to act.
The recommendations of the Faculty of Applied Science
In reference to students of the various years were considered separately, and on motions of Dean Brock
seconded by Mr. Turnbull, were adopted.
RACULTY OF AGRICULTURE
Dean Clement presented a summary of the Christmas
examination results in the Faculty of Agriculture. No
students were asked to withdraw.
The question of adjustments in the standing of
these students, if any should be necessary, was considered. It was urged that authority for adjustment
should be given by Senate to the Faculties not under a
separate motion but combined with the resolutions for
the adoption of the recommendations of the Faculties in
reference to the discontinuance of attendance.

Mr. Angus ) That the motions concerning
First and Second Year students
in the Faculty of Arts and
Science be reconsidered.

Mr. Angus ) That the recommendations requiring
certain First and Second Year
students to discontinue attendance for the remainder of the
session be approved subject to
the necessary adjustments - these
adjustments being left in the
hands of Faculty.

Thursday, December 31st, 1951
On motions made by Dean Brock and seconded by Mr.
Turnbull similar action was taken in regard to the
motions previously passed in reference to students in
Applied Science, and resolutions were passed approving
the recommendations of the Faculty "subject to the
necessary adjustments by Faculty".
Dean Buchanan stated that the Deans of the Faculties
would like to send to the press a list of all the people
in the First and Second Years in Arts, Agriculture,
Nursing and Applied Science who have passed in Class I,
Class II and who passed without supplementals.

of Christmas examination results be
left to a committee to be appointed
pro tem, the committee to consist of
Dean Buchanan and Professor Angus.
