VOL. 3, No. « QUEENSTOWN, MASSETT INLET, B.C. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 19L3 5 Cents per Copy District News Items WODEN We are pleased to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Hibbert among the new settlers at the Woden. It begins to look farm like around these parts. Messrs. McCall and Dill having lately brought in a fine team of horses, and are preparing to break ground 6oon. The settlers of this district have passed the experimental age, the soil by actual test has made good. Proof of this can be found by visiting Fritz Rampmier, Fred Gedhun, Frank Port- more, Roscoe Rupe, George Vaughn, Wren & Son, Wm. Hudson, Paul Sanders and Dan Sutherland. These gentlemen were among' the first pre-emptors here and by their industry and practical •work have laid.an agricultural foundation that should encourage the rapid building up of natural resources to be found here. Come ye skeptics, and see. John Abrahamson has joined the working force of .Hazelton & Campbell, boat builders. This department of Woden industry is certainly prospering. Yellow cedar sawdust fills the air at times and the entire floor space of the building, 90 x.JsO, is crowded with rush order specials. That the local public know how to appreciate a good thing is noted by the number of orders that this enterprising firm have been receiving of late. The plumbing and sheet iron department of the Woden industries, under the management of Mr. Watson, is prospering. Work ;going out to Tingley Bros, at Queenstown, and for jail equipment at Massett. Henry Holland, who has the building of the Harrison dwellings at Queenstown, came home for a few days this week. We are glad to be able to report that Mr. McDougall is rapidly improving in health. However, through it all, he has been the same happy, good hearted Martin. He is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Campbell. GRAHAM CENTRE The executive committee of the Debating Club met on Monday afternoon to arrange who should take papers at the next club meeting, and also to transact other important business. The ladies of the townsite held a meeting last week to make arrangements for the Xmas and- New Year festivities. Great enthusiasm was shown and a splendid programme has been drawn up, consisting of dances, dinners, and a monster Xmas Tree for the children. A committee has been appointed to carry out the final arrangements. Divine service was held in the Anglican Church on Sunday at 11 a.m., the Rev. H. H. K. Greene officiating. Mr. McQuaker is spending a day or two up at his ranch getting things in shape before going on the outside. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Millard received a surprise packet Monday night when a large number of friends from tha surrounding district descended on them. With dancing and games a most enjoyable evening was spent. The Graham Centre Debating Club held its first social last Saturday evening. The Rev. H. H. K. Greene presided. The programme, which was a marked success, was divided in two parts, the first consisting of instrumental music and songs, and the second of games, in which all present took part. The programme opened with a brief address by the Chairman, in which he outlined the objects of the society and extended a hearty welcome to the members and friends. He expressed a hope that they would thoroughly enjoy themselves and stated that entertainments on a similar plan would be held every two weeks, at which he hoped he would have the pleasure of meeting them all again. Mr. Greene then announced a duet by Miss Adam and Capt. MacTavish, which was well received by the audience. The second item on the programme was a song composed by Miss Adam, which was conceded to be the star event of the evening. It was entitled "An Islander," and showed what the inventive genuis of a Graham Island settler could accomplish with a eoal oil can. Mils Adam rendered her song in a manner which "brought down the house," and great credit is due her for the spleadid result she achieved. Rev. Mr. Green then sang some old favorites which took well, the audience joining in the chorus. Capt. MacTavish followed with a comic song, which was Reported Big Seam Of Coal Discovered At Camp Wilson A report has reached town to the effect that a 24 ft. seam of coal has been discovered at Camp Wilson. During the past few months a number of men have been engaged prospecting the property, which, we understand, is cnntrolled by a New York company, and which was formerly in the hands of the Western Steel Corporation. So far we have been unable to verify the report, which was brought down from the camp by a local man, who also stated that the seam had been traced for over half a mile. Many years ago coal was discovered at Camps Robertson and Wilson, but nothing was done, with the exception of sinkirig a shaft, to prove up the coal measures to any extent until this year. The report, if true, will mean much for Queenstown, being less than thirty miles distant from the camp and the natural base for getting supplies in. -o An enjoyable time was spent on Saturday night at Mrs. E. J. Tingley's residence, where the members of the Tennis Club held a potato bake. Work was started this week on the construction of a pool room and hall for W. F. Hastie. ^he building will be 30 x 32, two storey. The ground floor will be used as the pool room arra the second floor as a hall. Mr. Hastie will also erect a two storey six-roomed house. The buildings will be completed and occupied before Christmas. Messrs. W. J. Leary and J. Walsh arrived here Monday night from the East coast, coming over the Mexican Tom trail. The purpose of their visit was to interest settlers and others of the benefits to be derived from municipal incorporation. A well attended meeting was held in the hotel Tuesday night, when Mr. Leary fully explained the- Municipal Act and how the Islands would benefit by incorporation, of which we will have more to say next week. loudly applauded. Refreshments were next in order and the dainty things served by the ladies gladdened more than the heart of a lonely rancher. After a short interval the second part of the programme was entered upon, which was composed of games. The first was an " Observation Table," followed by "Who am I," and a picture guessing competition. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Fishery Cruiser Gannet Visits Queenstown Appropriately enough the first strange boat to tie up at the new wharf was the fishery patrol cruiser Gannet, which paid her first visit to Queenstown on Sunday afternoon. A description of the boat appeared in our columns a few weeks ago, and bears out what was .aid at the time. A number of Massett people were guests on board Sunday, among whom were Fishery Officer Harrison, Capt. and Mrs. Blake, Mrs. Wilson, Miss Blanchet, Miss Orr, W. Hughes and Cyril Harrison. The party thoroughly enjoyed the trip and all spoke highly of the Gannet's speed qualities. Capt. John Haan is in command of the staunch little craft, which left Skidegate last week, coming up the west coast to Massett. During the trip no sign of poachers could be seen. o Allan Orr was in town Friday from Massett. Elder Wateon, D. A. Hazelton and «J. Abrahamson were here Monday from Woden. Mr. E. Baker of Tow Hill was called here last week to give attention to the young man Lehrman, who was very ill, but we are glad to report is now much better. Mr. Nash kindly sent the Polaris for Mr. Baker. W. L. Barton of the local sawmill has many orders on hand for lumber for local people who are building, and is kept busy meeting demands. Hazel Ion & Cambpell, the Woden river boat builders, took away several thousand feet of cedar boards this week from the mill. With so many scattered communities on Graham Island, and no central organization established, there is not the opportunity to bring before the people many of the requirements of the island. , Political and other organizations are a benefit in a manner, and are very useful about election times; but where we have a large number of men of different political opinions, there should be one organization, in which politics could be tabooed, and where the members look after the interests of all concerned in i advancing the Islands. Other communities have an organization of the nature of a board of trade, which comprize the business men and others interested in the welfare of the district. At the meetings all matters of impor- portance are discussed and means taken to bring before the government the wants of particular districts. On our islands such an organization would do an immense amount of good. Regular meetings would be held and committess appointed to look after certain business. Men of any particular political opinion would attend the meetings, knowing I that there would be but one idea, the 1 advancement of the islands. No particular portion would be favored, to the detriment of the other, and where we now have individual effort to obtain concessions of any kind, we would have all working harmoniously. Good Roads. From the Globe we learn that the time has come for Canadians to grapple effectually and efficiently with the perennial road problem. The solution of the problem, we are told, will solve other problems. For instance, "good roads mean more steady attendance of children at school through a larger portion of the year. Good roads mean denser rurual population. Good roads mean the maintenance of better rural schools and better rural conditions. Good roads mean much to the cost of living struggle in the cities and towns. Good roads add to the comfort and happiness of the people as well as to their financial prosperity. Good roads have considerations not measured by dollars." Prince Albert Will' operate between Victoria and Prince Rupert; calling at Vancouver and way ports, both north and southbound. The new Radiotelegraph Act, which was given assent to by the governor-general on June 6,1913, makes it compulsory for every passenger ship to carry wireless and also a competent operator. Many of the steamers now running in the British Columbia trade are equipped with wireless, but there are quite a number which lack this means of communication. The G. T. Addreti Adams & M'Quaker Graham Centre, P.O., B. C. Letter To The Editor, f Sir,—Although I understand the '' Massett Leader'' has partly atoned for a recent item which appeared in its "Woden News," my attention has been called to the item in question so frequently that I feel that it is due to those whose characters were reflected upon to take some public notice of the gratuitous insult conferred upon them. The " Leader" on September the 4th referred to the fact that a survey party was camped "in our midst" at the Woden River, and proceeded to state that "The boys are a hard working, gentlemanly outfit and do not leave the unsavory impression so frequently associated with logging and survey camps." While the latter part of the above quotation indicates, a perhaps, pardonable ignorance on the part of the correspondent of the "Leader," it surely is the duty of its editor to censor the contributions of his reporters and to obliterate those portions which are unduly discriminating and which are likely to impart ah "unsavory impression " of fully seventy per cent of the male residents of the Islands. Fully the above percentage have at one time or another been privileged to work either on survey parties or at logging camps. If the item referred to was meant merely to indicate that members of survey or logging camps occasionally indulge too freely in the "cup that cheers," what of it? Are we then so different from the remainder of mankind. Or were the susceptibilities of the writer aroused because we occasionally use language unsnited to the drawing room. Again, why discriminate? when most men, alas, have the same failing when away from the restraint of social intercourse. 1 challenge the "Leader" to show that either class of men mentioned are any worse than their fellows of other walks of life. There are black sheep in every fold, my friend, and ' 'There isso much good in the worst of us And so much bad in the best of us That it ill behoves any of us To talk about the rest of us." Let me remind the " Leader" that it takes men to open up a new country, and although these men have men's vices as well as their virtues, they are not to be abused with impunity. "We aint no city hypocrites, We aint no blackguards too, But we're sinful men of the big woods, Most remarkable like you." Thanking you, Mr. Editor, for the space occupied.—Yours faithfully, F.
