C, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1914. $2 PER YEAR Annut„trDi*ion",ooet WAR GLEANINGS FROM FAR AND NEAR (Report of Minister of Mines) Two Million At the mouth of McGillivary creek I left the P.G.E. railroad- grade on Ihe lake-shore and travelled in a westerly course along a steep switchback trail up the north side of the creek for about Men Facing Each Other — Great Battle Expected in Near Future The meagreness of dispatches from the war centres appears to indicate that the censorship has become stricter than ever. Neither from England nor five miles to the property of the i France is any very late hint pas Anderson Lake Mining and Mill- !sin£ over the cable as to the Pr0 ing Company, known as the old "Brett mine," that was discovered by the Brett Bros, of Lillooet, in 1898. This is at an elevation of about 3,300 feet above sea level. No work has been done on this property since 1910. On the morning of August 13, although rain was failing, I broke camp and took the trail toward the summit of McGillivary mountain, where is located the property of the McGillivary Mountain Mines, Limited, of which:— Mr. S. A. Cawley M.P.P., of Chilliwack is president and J. M. Williams is managing director, who also personally superintends the work. The trail from the packers' camp at timber-line and gradually ascended until, at the mining camp, a distance of four miles, an elevation of 6,800 feet is reached and every .vestige of timber was left behind. The mountain-side has a slope of a- bout 35 degrees and is covered with a most luxuriant growth of grass and wild flowers. The rain turned to snow, and, when the cabin on the mining property was reached, a regular snowstorm, approaching a blizzard, was raging. McGillivary Mountain Mines With Mr. Williams as guide, 1 started to exanine this property, which consists of three mineral claims, staked in September 1911 and located as the Empire, Empire No, 1, and Empire No. 2. The Empire claim takes in the j;pex of the mountain, and on the north-west side is overlaid by a glacier for about 500 feet. The Empire No 1 claim is located to the east (mag.) of and adjoining the Empire, while the Empire 2 is still farther to the east and adjoining the Eagle No 1. A short Brussels despatch via London, according tc the Vancouver Laily Province, says: "The German retirement reported Tuesday is hecoming more marked today" The significance of this statement can only be guessed at. It may mean that an engagement in force actually is in progress, or it may refer only to the general covering movements that have been in course of execution for several days in Belgium. Brussels via London Aug 12. - A letter received here from Leige says the German general staff is installed in the Convent of the Sacred Heart, which is strongly barricaded. The Germans, it adds, are accumulating quantities of flour, in case they should find themselves invested instead of being the besieger?. Ottawa Aug 12—The recruiting for Canada overseas expeditionary force, which is expected to sail from Quebec towards the end of next week, definitely closes tonight at all recruiting stations in Canada. The department does not know exactly how many residents of the Dominion have put their names down on the enrolment lists, as detailed reports will not commence to come in till tomorrow. It is known that many thousands more have enrolled than will be required to make up the 25,000 men which it is proposed to assemble at Val- cartier. Of this nember, only 21.000 will be sent. One man out of every five will be eliminated as the result of target practice and the other tests to be held at the training camps. Whatever "Belgi ans" do from now on, even if they do not fire another shot, they will go down in history as a nation of great "fighters" with a courage and determination unlooked for by the worid at large. The ocean greyhounds, Luci- tania and Mauritania are being commissioned for service with The London Times correspondent in describing the first battle of the war, in the Daily Province among other items states— "Incredible as it may seem, the unhappy Germans are marched straight to death almost shoulder to shoulder. The Napoleonic tat- ics of the sudden application of overwhelming masses of men to achieve a desired victory or to reach a certain ajective point seem to have inspired the German generals, Apparently they hoped to satisfy the greed of the guns by a holacaust of victims." The result of this policy, he says, was a teriffic slaughter a- mong the closely concentrated ranks of the Germans. According to some accounts, the men were actually driven forward like sheep to the slaughter by their officers. Terror fought against discipline. "When the mighty fusilades of the Belgians began avenues were opened up in the German ranks," writes the correspondent, "and masses of dead began to accumulate in the green stretches that lay before the forts. Special warning has been issued by the Chief Forester, Victoria in regard to the uses of fire. The extremely dry weather has made the danger of fire throughout the District very critical, and the latest Weather Bureau report is to the effect that "conditions are right for hot East and North winds" thus creating a hazardous situation. Lillooet District generally, is reported as being clear of Forest fires, but fires have been raging in other parts of the Province. Fire not only destroys the Timber, but leaves bare the mountain watersheds, upon which the farmer in the valley, and the citizen in.the town rely for their supply of water, with its generous protection, the water supply is even, rnd continuous, without it, heavy floods, and then a period of drouth. Letter to the Editor Dear Sir— In this time of Crisis, it is the duty of every British Subject to be prepared for any emergency, and I would like to see every young man in this town join the Rifle Club. Arms and ammunition are at the disposal of all members and the firing range is open all day long, God of our Fathers, known of old Lord of our far flung battle line; 'Neath whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine, Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet Lest we forget, lest we forget! Yours faithfully, Lillooet Aug. 8. Britisher. The meeting of the residents of Lillooet, called for the purpose of discussing the raising of a war fund, took place in Satini's Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 8.30 p.m. Mr. W. Adams, having been voted to the Chair, explained to the meeting that the proposed Lillooet War Fund was to be a Trust fund, raised for the purpose of relieving the suffering in Canada and the British Isles caused by this terrible war, and would be under the control of a committee of gentlemen to be appointed by the meeting. The following were elected to act as committeemen: —Messrs. W. Adams (Chairman of committee), S. Gibbs, E. W. Corkett, J. S. Bell, W, J. Abercrombie, and Dr. H. A. Christie. Mr. Percy LeMare was elected Sec- Treasurer. It was decided that persons wishing to subscribe to the War Fund could do so either in a lump sum, or by monthly contributions at their own option. The meeting decided that before any monies raised may be used, the committee shall place before the residents of Lillooet, at a meeting called for this purpose, proposals for the disposition of the funds at their disposal. An enthuiastic and businesslike meeting terminated with the singing of — "God Save the King" Lillooet Contingent of B.C. Light Horse As an example of the patriotic spirit which prevails in our little some twenty (practically all the available voung men) of the local boys in the short space of two hours volunteered for service with the B.C. Light Horse, at home or abroad, in fact, for service where ever they could be made the best use of. Up till the present it has not been officially decided as to the number accepted, but 16 have passed medical examination, and are expecting to leave sometime Saturday. The time of departure has not been decided on up to the present but notices will be placed in various parts of the town of such when it becomes known. At the meeting of the committee appointed for the War Fund, held at Dr, H. A. Christie's office on Main St., it was decided to give the departing soldier boys who have given their services, to their King and Country, a rousing send off. Mr. J, S. Bell, will speak at the time of departure, for the residents of Lillooet, and wish the men, God speed on their gallant mission. The committee wish to ask all residents of Lillooet, who are able to attend, to be there, to show their appreciation of the act of those who are about to depart to uphold the honor of the flag, which has "braved a thousand years the Battle and the Breeze." Church Services Methodist church : Morning (Sunday School) at 11. There will be the usual evening service Mr. Chas. J. Engstron will preach. A hearty invitation is extended to all. THE PROSPECTOR THE PROSPECTOR. l*ut>!Mi<*l in the interests of Lillooet District A. E. Ludwig, Manager. AUG. 14. 1914. For Sale A litter of well bred hound pups. Good on rabbits and coyottes, can be seen at the old Lachore ranch. Full particulars from Smith & Kradshaw, Lytton. from page one surveys should have reached a- bout 17 feet farther in, where, if found, it would give 60 feet of backs; from there driftings was to be commenced, and the height of backs would increase very rapidly. The crosscut was commenced at this point instead of on the outcrop because of the exposed position of the latter to snowslides. Some idea of the clanger from these may be had from the fact that at the time of my visit there was the regains of a slide several feet deep lying between the cabin and the mine- workin s. The (issue, filled with vein- matter, forms a most conspicu-" ous land mark on the mountainside; the dip of the ore-body is at an angle of 60 degrees towards the south, the strike being N. 75 degrees W. (mag.). The vein- matter is quartz carrying malachite, azurite, and grey copper. The foot-wall is an argillite, the hanging-wall on the surface being serpentine. Slide rock almost fills a deep gulch to the east of the mountain and below the mine workings but, at a point about 700 feet lower elevation and some 1,500 feet horizontally along the strike of the ore from the outcrop of the mountain, I found what was apparently a continuation of th'i ore-body in place on the Empire No. 1 claim, and took a sample across 4 feet which assayed; Gold, 40 cents; si! /er, 35.4 oz.; copper 0.5 percent, a ton. These samples were not taken to represent a "cold-blooded average," but as being typical of the class of ore. In the gulch beyond the rock- slide I had a trood opportunity to study the series of country-rocks, which includes a narrow belt of crystalline limestone next to ar- giilities on the northern or foot- wall side, with intrusive dykes of igneous rocks resembling gabbro and pegmatite granite, as well as masses of diorite, on the southern or hanging-wall side, but no serpentine showed on this low level. Some fine large green crystals, apparently hornblende with very distinct stration marks, were noticeable in the rock in place in this gulch, which extends towards the east quite a considerable distance. Mr. Williams had a force of four men working on the lower adit and expected to continue working until as late as possible, and, if he could arrange accommodations and get in supplies, he hoped to work all winter. To the westward from the Empire group and on the opposite side of the glacier on the summit of McGillivary mountain, several mineral claims ha\\e been located and assessment work done; the most prominent of these are three claims held by the estate of W. T. Smith. Jack Johnson, and Dr. II. Christie, of Lillooet.
