But Lillooet decreed otherwise, and en Friday night a gathering unequalled in the annals of "Our Empire claim, of which I had tak-j Little City, "toe k the form of a and would have en | samp j,^^^_^^^_^^__ been glad to have taken me over their ground, but the depth of snow absolutely prevented any examination, and the weather conditions did not promise any improvement, at least for days; consequently i took Mr. Olson as guide over the Smith summit, where rdl the trails are obliterated. I continued my journey and in the afternoon reached the bottom of the mountain and Cadwallader creek valley, where a gang of roadmen were camped, engaged in slashin r out a new trail around the base of this mountain to the divide at the heads of Cadwallader and McGillivary creeks, and so connect with the trail built down the latter creek. When this connection is made, it will be quite an easy trip from the mouth of McGillivary creek over the divide, at 5,800 feet elevation, and down Cadwallader creek. The- distance from the Pacific Great, Eastern Railway, at the mouth of McGillivary Ck., to the Coronation mine on Cad- wallaea creek by this new route will not exceed twenty-two miles As we descended the Smith mountain on the Cadwallader Smoking Concc: Mr. J. A. Skerchly, F.R.G.S., was in the chair, and, as we heard a delighted member of the company remark, "made everyone feel thoroughly at ease." A notable feature of the proceedings was an impassioned speech, by Mr. J. S. Bell, who briefly reviewed Naval development during the last half century. He concluded with a Clarion call to the manhood of the nation to rise and smite the enemy "hip and thigh." He showed a remarkable grasp of facts and figures vitally related to the present World crisis, and his weighty words will not soon be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to be present. . Chief of Police. W. Spiller, 1st class gun layer in His Majesty's Navy, spoke to "The War," and --as might, be expected from one of the Bull-dog Breed—his words vibrated with an intense desire to have a shot, not at a target this time, but at the enemy. His record shows that, given the oppo- tunity, he would make the enemy "see things." Specially impressive was the speech to "Our Boys" by Mr. W. Adams Ex-M.P.P. With the Lil- creek side from an elevation of j jooet Contingent of the B. C, 6,800 feet there was no snow on I Horse lined up before him, and the ground at about 300 feet he low tlie summit, although rain had fallen heavily, which appeared strange, as on McGillivary creek side the snow extended down to the creek-level, or at l"ast about'1,000 feet lower than the summit. Frier ds of Bob Thomas will be glad lo learn that he is considerably better. Mr. Cuthbert of Moha has been caile 1 to join the colors today. Mr. Furkholder of N.F. spent a few days in town this week, Mr. Percy LaMare. District Forester, brings home a Bride from Kamloops this week. They have our Best Wishes. Mrs. W. T. Bridge and daughter arrived in Lillooet Wednesday with the audience hanging on every word he uttered, this Veteran member of the B.C. Legislature told "The Boys" of the pride which Lillooet felt in having 14 such fellows ready to give up, if necessary, their lives to I the cause of King and Country. I While most of us were doing something for the great movement, the young men were giving themselves, than which gift there could be no greater sacrifice. Finally he exhorted them to trust in the God of Battles, and do the right. He expressed a desire that Lillooet might see them yet again. Whatever happened they would do their duty. That was what Lillooet expected and believed they would do. Mr. W. E. Sandys, one of the Volunteer "Boys of- Lillooet," The War Fund has passed the j and deservedly one of the most $200 mavk. \\popular fellows in town, spoke in Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Noel left reply to Mr. Adams, thanking for the coast on Wednesdsy. | him on behalf of his comrades-in- ments of the Town. He assured those present that he and those who were leaving with him would not easily forget the hearty Send- off they were receiving. They did not know where they were going, but were ready at the call of duty to go anywhere and do their best in the discharge of their duty. Mi-. Sandys combining in himself French and English blood, is a living embodiment of the Entente Cordiale, and thus represent in a special degree the mixed nationalities, French and English, of which Canada so largely consists. His manly speech was the keynote of the general Esprit de Corps which prevails among the "Boys." The musical side of the programme was well represented by the singing of Patriotic Airs. The " Heart Songs " and Melodies which have so often cheered the man we know so well by the name of Tommy Atkins, were interspersed with the speech es. Never were the Songs and Anthems of the Allied Nations sung with mnre fervor, with more intense meaning, and under more grave circumstances, than they were in Lillooet on this evening, at the moment when in Europe no fewer than 18 millions of-men under arms were prepared to spring to the fight. Solos were sung by W. E. Sandys, Chas. Watt, A. B. Greig and others, several of the Airs calling forth frantic cheers for the Countries they represent. T. Sweet recited one of R. W. Service's most popular poems. The Walton-Lawrence Variety Co. kindly gave assistance in the form of several musical items. J. T. Rigg (L'llooet B. C. Mining Co.) is entitled to the thanks of the town for his energy in helping to organize such a highly successful Au Revoir. A vote of thanks is tendered Mr. M. R. Eagleson for his kind- neess in lending the hall. At the back of the Chairman, co.ering nearly one whole side of the room, was the immense Flag of Canada which will float so proudly over Lillooet when our enemies are beaten. God Save The King. Latest War Telegram No authentic news of Naval battle yet. St. Petersburg—Russians captured town East Prussia along with twelve German guns and a large number of prisoners, Paris — The re-occupation of Mulhausen-Alsace by the French is announced officially. The retaking waf preceeded by a very severe battle, during which French troops took one suburb at point of the bayonet. They also took as result of their victory six German canons and six ammunition wagons. London—Despatch from Reuters News agency from Ghent says: Yesterdays fighting at Tershet was extremely hot. The appearance of two German aviators was the first intimation that the Germans who had been repulsed the previous day intended to renew the attack. Flying low the aviators surveyed the position then returned to report. Soon afterwards German infantry supported by machine guns and artillery opened fierce attack. The Belgians were outnumbered, but put up terrible resistance. Both sides fought like demons and the battle became a veritable butchery. Two Belgian regiments which already had distinguished themselves in the forts of Liege held the invaders in check for two hours. Both sides were losing heavily when the retreat was sounded. Major Gibson whose nose was broken by a bullet took charge of the Belgian rear guard which fought so stubbonly that only seven of his force of 288 men returned. On Saturday August 15th, the 14 chosen out of the 17 who volunteered for the front, left for Lytton. The autos in which they travelled carried the Union Jack and Canadian Flags. Most of the citizens of the town were assembled near the Flagstaff which bore aloft the Flag for which the "Boys of Lillooet" will fight. Many ladies of the town, with their families graced the occasion, and after the singing of the strains of "God be with you till we meet again," J. S. Bell made a short speech which expressed the sentiments of those present, viz., a fervent hope that all the volunteers would be spared to return, if they so desired, and for the success of the British Arms in general. Mr. Adams added a few words Methodist church : Morning (Sunday School) at 11. There will be the usual evening service Mr. W. T. Bridge will preach. Mrs. Willson and child, accompanied by her' sister, spent a few days in here. Mrs. J. Beh gave a farewell "lawn social" to the volunteers and their friends last Friday, 27 persons were present, of farewell, and W. E. Sandys very sweetly rendered a solo, which performance reminded those present that in him they were losing a singer of no mean merit. The moment of parting was bound to bring tears to the eyes of a few, and those brave boys who go to face the horrors of warefare, showed for a brief moment, that softer side of nature, which has to be sternly set aside, when the man of steel nerves faces the deadly hail of bullets. The Boys upon reaching Lytton, sent the following message:— To the citizens of Lillooet. We, the undersigned, feel that we cannot leave the District, without once more expressing our deep appreciation of the way in which you have all treated us since our enlistment for the front. Rest assured that we, "Boys of Lillooet" Will do our utmost to uphold the faith you have put in us. R. S. Ross B. Chadwick-Quinan W. Daly E. L. Boultbee B. Lund J. Henderson G. Keen G. Thompson G.
