E PROSPECTOR VOL. 3, NO. 49 LILLOOET, B. C, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1914. $2 PER YEAR Annual Report of Lillooet Mining Division (Report of Minister of Mines) British Gunners and Troops Heroic All Along The Line Argyle Fraction — This claim | owned by Mark Eagleson, is located easterly from and adjoining the Lorne group. During my visit the annual assessment-work was being done on this claim, and an effort was being made to remove by ground - sluicing the heavy overburden and cross channel the ground with a deep trench This work exposed the contact between the argillities and diorite about 1.500 feet from the workings on the King lode of the Lorne property. As there is but little natural exposure of "rock in place" on the claim, long crosscut trenches are absolutely necessary to prospect the ground, AI ham bra This claim is situated east of and adjoining the Woodchuck claim. It was acquired by a New York syndicate in 1901, when development work was carried on for some months, several thousands of dollars expended, and the claim Crown granted. Since then I am informed the head of the syndicate has died and the property has remained idle. The ore outcrops in a bold precipitous bluff, and the main working consists of an adit drift, a- bcut 250 feet in length, with its portal about 100 feet lower than the outcrop. This height of backs increased as work progressed along the adit and at the face, because the bluff or ridge under which it is driven increases in elevation quite rapidly in the north easterly direction in which the adit was driven. The quartz vein followed by the drift is a very strong one, from 12 inches to five feet in width, with well- defined walls and several inches of gouge between the ore and each wall; the strike is true N. 75* E. and dip vertical. At the face the vein has pinched to G inches in width. A sample a- cross G inches of ore in the face of the adit assays: gold, $4; silver, trace, to the ton. Several other openings of minor importance have been made on this claim, evidently during a search for other veins, and while ore is exposed in some of these, the work has not been carried far enough to demonstrate any material facts. Woodchuck On nearly the same level as the top of the ore-bins, or about 100 feet lower than the adit just mentioned, work has been started on the main adit referred to earlier in this report. This has been driven in diorite country- rock 230 feet, but not yet progressed far enough to expose any of the veins, although, apparently, such should be done within a continued on page two With regard to the atrocities at the from, the following speaks for itself: — Guelph, Ont. Sept 30—James Petit of York road Guelph, received a letter today from an aunt in Stratford Terrace, England. One paragraph of the letter states "We have in our house to care for a little Belgian girl aged 8 who had both hands chopped off by German soldiers. Her brother a little younger, was mutilated so | as he would never be able to use a rifle." TO-MGHT Germans Shoot Prisoners and Wounded Will They. A reuter despatch from Paris says— Thirty gunners of the British field artillery have fallen killed or wounded. Knowing they were going to almost certain death, they called out, Good-bye fellows to their comrades in the reserve line. Two minutes later every man was out of action. Thirty more went to the front with the same farewell greeting. The German shells were falling thickly behind the battery and killed or wounded every man serving the guns. Eventually the persistence and accuracy of the British fire proved effective, and the British infantry took the po sition at the point of the bayonet According to a wounded German officer, the British cavalry are devils, they charge standing up in shortened stirrups and that the swing of their sabres beheaded their enemies. They handled their horses like ponies on a polo field. The Germans are allowing the people to feed and assist the French, but not the British — what more honor could we wish. The Zoua v es are covering themselves with glory. In brief the report is as follows— The French under tremendous pressure were compelled to recede and left 8 3- inch guns to the enemy. The Zouaves begged to be allowed to retake the position. The charge was sounded, the men charged, and although a large number fell it seemed as if there were only a few flashes before the .enemy broke and the guns were taken and turned on the fleeing enemy. King George on a visit to the London Hospital, asked again why such terrible slaughter a- mong the British officers. The replies show that the are too keen upon leadership and look-out to be bothered with their own safety- Fierce fighting is in progress near Antwerp, the Germans are reported to have reinforced seig- ers with naval men, so that in should they be successful in their attempt to take Antwerp, they will be able to use them from that quarter to attack the British fleet in the North sea. The Italians are reported to have lost two vessel from mines. SOCIAL and DANCE Everything points to the certainty that the above social will be a most enjoyable entertainment. The committee in charge have done all they could to ensure that everything that would add to the pleasure of the visitors would be found ] at the ••Lillooet Opera House To-night[ para «MKiOTa»p»7V7wat-.,T-r that Gus Nichols of Meadow Lake, occupatitn luucui c-r. intends to app y for permission to lease the following described land: Comn.encingr at a post planted at the S.W. corner of lot -638, thence no.th 59.220 chains, thence west 40 chains, thence south to the north shore of , Meadow Lake, thence cast following said shore of said Lake to point of commencement.
