Arrangements for the first issue of $5,000,000 of the provincial government guarantee bonds of the • Pacific Great Eastern Railway have been made by J. W. Stewart and D'arcy Tate. The big- financial houses in London, when they submitted their proposition, were quick to recognize that while other transcontinental lines produced a fringe of population along their routes, the Pacific Great Eastern will not only serve as a link in a new transcontinental line into Vancouver, but running north and south through the centre of the province, will tap vast tributary regions, embracing thousands of square miles possessing rich natural resources at present absolutely without transportation facilities. If figures can convey any approximate idea of what the world owes to its apostles of progress, the numbers appearing on the aviator's death roll are a story within themselves- From one death in the years 1899, 1903, 1905 and 1908 to four in 1909 seems startling. But the figures assume alarming proportions when they amount up to thirty-seven in 1910, seventy-seven in 1911, and long before the year is out, sixty-three in 1912. At a cursory glance one begins to feel that these figures bespeak an unnecessary expenditure of life and to wonder if the gain to the world is worth the cost to individuals, particularly in consideration of the fact that the inventor has yet some distance to go before arriving at the acme of perfection. No Place for Stammerers A story is told of a Kansas man who stutters badly. He visited Chicago and got into the elevator of one of the sky scrapers. He worked his jaw frantically but couldn't get the elevator boy to understand until he had been carried up fourteen storeys beyond where he wanted to go. Then he came down to the lower floor and started up again. After he had gone through this performance several times he stepped out in disgust and hunted up the gent who was directing the running of the elevators "S-s-say." he stammered, "w-w-w-would y-you m-mind speaki' t-to th-th-that f-f-fel-feller in th-that cage? I w-a-wa-want t-to st-st-stop at the s-s-sixth-floor, b-b-but b-be- fore I can s-s-say s-s-sixth h-he has me up t-t-to the t-t-twenty- s-seventh. "Kansas City Star. Churce Notice The Rev. The Prospector Correspondence The Editor, Lillooet Prospector. Sir- Once more the assizes are over and the jurors and others have gone about their usual business. It is a wonder to me how long the semi-annual assizes are to be held in a town where everybody gets the maximum both of discomfort and charges. For years the grand jurors have recommended that the court be removed elsewhere, partly because the court house is small and inconvenient and also because there is no accomodation worthy the name for the jurors—but there has been no change. It is no use to abuse the authorities for not improving matters—it is up to the people concerned to kick strenuously; then something will be done. If not, conditions will be left as they are, which I hope and believe are un- equaled in the Dominion of Canada. Some of the residents in the town have the idea that the assizes will always be held at Clinton and unless there is a good strong and continuous kick, it is not improbable unless the court house collapses, which seems likely. However, gentlemen it is up to us, and if you won't get up a good solid kick, stop grumbling. C. D. WRAY. Capital Increased The common stock shareholders of the C. P. R. have authorized the issue of $60,- 000,000 of common stock at 175, bringing up the capitalization of the road to $260,- 000,000. o An Old One, This —o An Irishman walking through a graveyard saw a tombstone on which was inscribed: "Here lies a lawyer and an honest man." "Be- jabbers!" said Pat, "Oi wonder how they came to bury both iv them fellers in wan grave!" Dominion Finances The Dominion financial statement for the past six months, shows a total revenue of $81,378,650, an increase of more than seventeen million dollars as compared with the corresponding period last year. The increase averages nearly three million dollars per month, and is the largest on record for any half-year in the history of the Dominion. Double Tracking The C. P. R. is double tracking their line between Calgary and Vancouver. Parties are out all along the route and vrork is progressing. DRUGGISTS and STATIONERS Lillooet, - B. C- The Prospector Gives All The News. The Prospector Male Attire M. Le Bargy, a Parisian matinee idol, said to be the best dressed man in France, asserts that he spends a minimum of $6,000 a year on his wardrobe. As clothing is supposed to be only about half as expensive in Europe as on this side of the Atlantic, M. Le Bargy's clothing expenditure is equivalent to about $10,000 in America, and some experts who have been interviewed on the subject in the latter country express the opinion that he is exagerating. After making all allowances, his American critics are convinced that he does not spend $6,000 a year on his clothes. The fact is that for two or three thousand dollars a year a man can acquire some little reputation as a fashion plate even in New York City.
