PROSPECTOR VOL. 4, NO. 8 LILLOOET, B. C, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1914. $2 PER YEAR General News of Lillooet District Skating has been the predominating sport during the past week. Mr. Morfey, late of the Union Bank staff here, left this week for Vancouver. We have often wondered where some hats came from—we know now—Professor. Don't forget the School concert and dance in the New Santini Hall, TO-NIGHT at 8 o'clock sharp. What would the German War Lords have done had they heard the singing of "Tipperary" last Friday evening ? Every year over 100,000 herring are caught in Canada—no mention of how many suckers. Believe that your neighbor is as good as yourself, as worthy as yourself, and as honest,.for the chances are that he is more so. Dont whisper "confidentially" anything you have heard about your neighbor, which you don't bc-lieve--until you are sure you are not guilty of the same old thing. •Telegraphic communications can' now be sent direct to the Northern country. Until quite recently the messages had to be sent via Ashcroft. There is to be a Xmas tree for the "grown ups." Anyone can send a gift for their friends if they so desire. See W.T.B., the Mothodist Parsonage, Lillooet. We are proud of the Lillooet citizens and district residents for the "grand rally" in connection with the raising of Funds for the war. The result to-day stands: $500 Prince of Wales Fund; $500 Belgian Relief Fund; with the sum of $440.83 on hand for the Canadian Patriotic Fund. Mr. C. Phair has received from C. E. Wynn-Johnson, of Alkali Lake the sum of $125, a donation to the Canadian Patriotic Fund. This amount was handed over to the treasurer of the Lillooet War Fund on December 4. The committee wish to express their appreciation of Mr. Johnson's generosity and valuable assistance. The war fund now stands at $440. £3 Children's Christmas Tree Christmas is the Children's Festival and the boys and girls of Lillooet are to have a visit from Santa Claus on Tuesday, December 22. He has promised to bring something for "every child in the town." He never disappoints his little friends. Look out for santa. Santa Claus says he will be here, SURE. He has already begun to select gifts for his young friends and will take care that he does not overlook any boy or girl when he comes to Lillooet at Xmas time. Write a letter to him boys and girls and tell him your age and Post it At Once. Patriotic Concert- and Grand Dance Splendid Rally of the Lillooet Citizens—Total Receipts Amount to $126.00 Lillooet's second patriotic concert and dance in aid of the War Fund was held in the New Santini Hall, on Main Street, last Friday evening. The concert, like the first one, was a great success. Mr. W. J. Abercrombie opened the evening's entertainment by a short but appropriate address, explaining the objects of the evening, also stating that he was proud to be able to stand before such a fine representative assembly of the Lillooet citizens, who had gathered together not only for a pleasant evening, but mainly to help forward so grand a cause as the object of the evening. The various numbers were of a more or less patriotic character, the stage being suitably Pecora- ted to correspond. The programme was so well balanced that it was hard to pick out the bright ar.d particular stars of the evening, every number being enthuiastically encored "Tipperary," sung by Mr. G. Downton, was certainly the children's favorite, for they joined in the chorus quite lustilly, in fact, so lustilly, that the whole assembly were quite "carried away", and nothing but the repetition of the chorus would pacify their enthuiasm, the hall was made to ring again and again. The programme of the evening was as follows:— Tommy Atkins Mr. Gibbs Not that sort of person. Mrs. Le Marc and Mr. Sangar. Conversazione Mr. Swann. The flag that never comes down Mr. Sangar. Revenge Mr. Downton. Our Farm Mrs. Le Mare and Mr. Sangar. Tipperary Mr. Downton. Mother Machree Mr. Keeley. The old folks at hom_. Troupe Solomon Levi Mr. Sangar. Polly Wolly Doodle Mr. Downton'. Croon, Croon, Mrs. Le Mare. That hat Mr. Bridge. Dooh Dah Mr. Goddrrd. Kentucky Babe The Troupe. Action song. Ten little nigger boys Members of Troupe The Maple Leaf was then sung, followed by God Save the King. Minstrel Troupe—Mrs. Christie, Mrs. Le Mare, Miss Hurley, Messrs. Bridge, Downton God- dard, Hughes, Leslie, Le Mare, Morfey, Slocum, Swann, Greig, and Sangar. Much credit is due to Mrs. P. Le Mare for the able way in which she managed the program for the evening. Mrs. F. E. Anderson presided at the piano, and was much appreciated by all. Mr. W. T. Bridge was the Professor of the Troupe, which position he so ably filled that a stranger would be led to believe that it was his life's work. The dance which followed the concert was also a grand success, a large crowd remaining until the wee small hours. The total receipts from the above concert amounted to $126. The total net amount which is to be handed to the Lillooet War Fund by Mrs. Le Mare has not been arrived at yet, as all expenses in connection with the concert have not up to the present been settled. $7.CO of the money was obtained by candy sold during the entertainment, for which, we are greatly indebted to Mesdames Macfarlane, Christie, Duguid and Mclntyre, all of whom contributed bags of home made candy. Hull. —Forty-seven persons are reported to have been killed at Hartlepool and a number injured in the bombardment of that port by German cruisers this morning The bombardment of Hartlepool lasted for twenty-five minutes. The several vessels which took part in the operation are estimated at from two to six but never were they visible from the shore. London — Petrograd's water supply reported to have been cut off owing to the blocking of the Neva conduits by ice, has been restored, according to a telegram from the Russian capital to Reuter's Telegram Company. Paris.—Telegram from Geneva to the temps says a despatch from Berlin cofirms the report that the Riser's condition is quite serious. The Crown prince will remain in Berlin for the present. London, Dec 16. —The long expected German attack on England was made to-day, and for the first time in the history of the United Kingdom, hostile warships bombarded English towns. Scarborough, Hartlepool, Redcar and Whitby, on the shore of the North Sea, were shelled by German warships. The extent of the damage inflicted has not been revealed. It seems possible, however, that Germany has sent a few swift cruisers for a raid on the coast of England, largely for its moral effect, and had not attemped an action with its main fleet or an invasion of England. It is thought possible, however, that the main German fleet may have come out, and that the vessels which bombarded the British coast were the only ones that sccceeded in breaking through Jellicoe's fleet- Province. Important Battles the Coast Along London December 16. — The Admiralty reports that engagements are taking place at several points up and down the coast. It is rumored that two German cruisers have been sunk, but this lacks official confirmation. A statement given out by the official information bureau says that the German war ships which have been bombarding the eastern coast of England have been driven off by the West Hartlepool fortress. An earlier official report reads as follows: "German movements of some importance are taking place in the North Sea this morning. Scarborough and Hartlepooi have been shelled. Our flotillas have been engaged with the enemy at various points. . The situation is develloping." The German ships bombarding the coast were soon under fire from British torpedo - boat destroyers, which steamed out to attack them. The Germans then went into action against the destroyers. You no doubt noticed that the British boats did not take long to get after the enemy round the coast. The French war office to-day gave out the following statement "In Belgium the town of West- end, has been violently bombarded by the British fleet." Panama, Dec. 16 — Colonel Goethals has again cabled to Secretary of War Garrison at Washington, setting forth his need for torpedo-boat destroyers in canal ports in order to preserve the neutrality of the canal zone. In his message the Colonel says he has no means of preventing the use of the canal or Panaman ports as a means of communication and that these ports apparently are being used to this end at the present time. Rome—Despatches from Constantinople describe the Turks as panic stricken by the sinking of the battleship Messuddieh by a British submarine. The expliot has provoked indignation against Germans for precipitating Turkey into war with defenses of the Dardanelles in neglect. In Austria, especiallay in Gali- cia, cholera is spreading rapidly. Eight hundred and forty-four cases were reported during the first week in November, in which period there were 331 deaths. There were 90 deaths in Vienna. In Hungai'y, during the same week there were 532 cases of cholera. Eight hundred mine workers are entombed in a mine in Japan.
