The Germans made fresh counter-attacks, whicli have been repulsed. Prisoners confirm the seriousness of the losses sustained by two regiments of the Guards in the fighting yesterday. In Argonne a German attack was repulsed. Near Verdun a German aeroplane was brought down. WOODS, mai'5It City Clerk. An interesting personal letter has been received by the editor of this paper from Capt. C. W. Peck, commanding the local company that has gone with the 30th Battalion to meet the nation's enemy on the fields of Europe. Capt. Peck and his command are so well known here that tlieir movements are of more than passing interest to everyone in Prince Rupert. The liberty has therefore been taken of printing the letter as it conveys a message to each citizens as well as to the one who received it. It is as follows: R.M.S. Missanabie, Feb. 22, 1915. Dear Nels,—We arrived here yesterday and embarked in the afternoon. We expect to sail today. As far as I know, there are three battalions of infantry going beside other details. They are divided as follows: 23rd Battalion, Montreal, and right -half of 30th Battalion I including Headquarters), on" the Missanabie; .___"_jil Battalion (less one platoon) of Winnipeg, and one company of the 30th Battalion, on the Megantie; 27th Battalion of Quebec (so it is rumored) and one company of the 30th Battalion, on the Southland. We ex- ?c't to he consorted by three cruisers, including the Essex and the Glory. I think there is no doubt we are going to England. These battalions are called the spare battalions and do not belong to the Second Contingent, but are going over probably as reinforcements of the First Contingent. We are all very comfortable on the Missanabie, which is a fine large steamer belonging to the C. P. R. My' company, of course, be longs to the right half and is on hoard, too. We had a splendid trip across the continent. The men were allowed a great deal of latitude and respected It rightly. They displayed the most amazing enthusiasm, and whenever they saw a human being cheered lustily. The car was chalked all over with all kinds of mottoes and names, such as "Direct from Victoria i..;;.i.Y or Presbyterian LTit'iiCIJ J'U I.;-.
