No. 281 New Vein Located On Trimbers Property Near Telkwa Citizens Ate Fish And Meditated On Future Of Industry British Will Keep Hammering All Winter At Germans Prince Rupert Should Look Well To Holding ' Fishing Industry ROAD TO SOUTH FORK OF TtLKWA Yesterday the citizens of Prince Rupert, to tlie number of about eighty, gathered at the Central Hotel and enjoyed a "lish luncheon" served by Jlr. and Mrs. Black. The menu was practically confined to fish, and was served in excellent form. The luncheon was arranged for by the Board of Trade, and following the meal T. II. Johnson, Manager of tbe Canadian Fish & Cold Storage Company, addressed the gathering. Mr. Johnson referred to the fact that the fish dinner was provided at the request of the Fish Association. IV admonished them to eat fish every Tuesday and every Friday. or to the railway. He thought it should be "service first," for that implied safety to the public. It cost $2 to deliver 100 pounds of fish from Prince Rupert to Montreal. This included all the cost of boxing, etc. It cost 65 cents to take 100 pounds of copper over the same route. This was important when it came, as it would soon come to a question of delivering ground fish with which these rates abounded. These matters would have to be adjusted. Dealing with the Government end, he advocated the experimenting In transferring haddock spawn from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was a Prince Rupert had the title of be ,i v , .i r i i „ i,wi„o im°st valuable fish and this should ing the home of the fishing nidus- > try on the Pacific coast. To retain that title they must give service in all ways as to transportation. The industry in Prince Itupert had not been stolen. It was secured hy better ser- i be done. The United States Government had done this in the matter of I shad, and this year Pacific shad had I been shipped east. He advocated more frequent fish vice and by the geographical position ! luncheons like thia. of the city. It spoke well for the men who/foresaw this in establishing Prince Rupert. The fact that so many American fishermen were coming here showed that there was better service here. He believed that after the war prices would again become normal, j Q L xlckersont ,,he President of They must look well to the quality |the Roar(I] who ,g now ,„ the clty for n few days only, in putting the vote to the gathering, laid stress Following the address a vote of thanks was moved by Mayor McCaffery, seconded by G. A. Woodland, Vice-President of the Board of Trade, in which thanks were conveyed to the speaker and to Mr. and Mrs. Black. so that the trade might be held. The fish should come in in- good condition, be packed well and shipped in good shape. The chain between the fisherman and the house wife in the east must be kept, unbroken. The railway company was very essential. The railway had a keynote, "safety first." He did not know whether this refered to the public SPECIAL NOTICE To Our Many Patrons: Friends and In order to give yon better service uml accommodation, we have transferred our business to the Westholme Theatre. They had shown this at one time previous and had got good results. He was sorry that they were not more united now. Mr. Nickerson said one of the best ways to show faith in the industry, as it affected the city, was.to put money into it. He could, from experience, speak well of the results of investing in a fishing boat. It had given the best returns he had got in Prince Rupert. If the people of Prince Rupert would but invest in fishing boats the question of the foreign owned vessels would soon pass, for all the new boats would be Canadian and would control the business done into the port. The gathering dispersed after singing "God Save tho King." When Buying Conl get! the best, It costs tin- same. New Wellington JEFFERSON AXD DOCKRILL HAVE BIG GANG OF MEN AT worn* ix INTERIOR Will Take Cotmpressor Plant In Over Snow This Winter. Jefferson & Dockrill have over sixty men working on the snow road to the Santa Maria mine, and every effort is being made to get it through before the snow flies, says The Omineca Herald. This will be a trunk road for sixteen miles up the Telkwa and for fourteen miles up the south fork of the same river. It will open up a good country. As soon as the road ls finished a compressor 'plant and hoist and other machinery will be taken in, so that the property can be worked on a big scale this winter. The Santa Maria is not a big property but it is high grade copper and there are seventy-five tons on the dump now. With the machinery in operation the ore can be taken out fast enough to keep every available horse in the district busy hauling, and that is Mr. Dockrill's intention. The road now being constructed will also be of service to the coal properties which are likely to be opened up next spring. New and permanent camps are be ing built at the mine and the out look for a busy season is very bright CANADIANS HAD PART IN TANKS IT IS BROUGHT TO LIGHT THAT THEV ARE AMONG CLAIMANTS FOR IXVEXTIOX t „ " Suggestions Seem To Have Been Made A Little Too Late. New Vein Struck On Cassiar Queen Property Near Telkwa Montreal, Oct. 31.—Among the several claimants for the credit of the invention of the tanks used in the Somme offensive are two Canadians. One is Pte. T. Hughes Cuddy of Winnipeg, who has been in charge of the X-ray installation at the Kenneth Camerons Hospital. Cuddy today showed the correspondent of the Gazette his diagrams and correspondence with the war oflice, which shows that toward the end of 1915 he submitted designs which were seriously considered, but the idea was apparently later than the invention which was accepted by the war oflice. The foregoing was a cable message to the Gazette, from its correspondent In London. The dispatch went on: "Another claimant, according to the News of the World, is an unnamed Scottish Canadian In the R. N. V. R., who submitted designs ln January, 1915. This.Journal suggests that these plans were the real basis of the experiments which were ultimately successful." Raleigh P. Trimble arrived last evening from the interior on his way WILL SEEK CAPITAL TO DEVELOP COAL south to Portland, Ore., where he ~*11 spend a short time. He reports James Wright, of the coal company that is opening up u seam at Seaton, on the line of the G. T. P., is said to have decided to go east to interest capital in the project. The work, it is estimated, will take several thousand dollars to get ;o a producing stage. Jlr. Wright has great confidence in the coal, and has now prospects of getting the capital to put it ou a producing basis. DAUGHTERS OF EMPIRE HOLI) MASQUERADE Despite Unfavorable Weather Large Number Were In At- tendance, One of the most successful and pleasant events of the season took that work is going along very satisfactorily on the Cassiar Queen property held by him near Telkwa. A new vein has been struck but the extent of it was not known when Mr. Trimble left, The new vein was discovered in crossrcuttitig from the main tunnel, which ls in about 400 feet now. A cross-cut was being run to meet the main body, which should bedi- countered at about 750 feet. At about 250 feet from the main tunnel this new body of ore was found. The ore is of a very similar character to that found elsewhere. Mr. Trimble says the new find can by no chance run to the \\ain vein whk-h could noi be encountered there. It is a distinct vein which had not been counted on. The Fish Day .-. • Ches of Mr. Johnston an I Mr. Xlckerson might well furnish food for reflection on the part '" ' i1'" ns of Prince It-.i- jrt. It may be that the trans, irta- ■ n companies are charging too much for hauling fish from the sea- shore to the i onsumi rs. This Is a thing that is frequently heard urged against railway corporations all over. It is scarcely fair, however, to com- pare the hauling of copper blocks to the conveying of fresh fish. Copper loaded on the cheapest class of cars here requires no further attention until it reaches its destination. It can be side-tracked and left in a blazing sun without the least concern. It is entirely different with fish. It is an exceedingly perishable commodity and must be watched constantly. It has to travel In expensively constructed cars and be kept iced. II must be hurried along without loss, of time. For this reason the comparison was not one upon which a laym could base a conclusion. But there were some other points that many would have liked Mr. Johnston to have explained when the question of cost was raised by him. One is the relation of a plant like the cold storage to the fish trade here. That plant to a layman's view ls big enough to take care of perhaps all the companies operating here at present. It draws a subsidy from the Dominion Government as a public necessity. Yet it is complained by those who would .use it that the rates demanded by the cold storage are excessive and prohibitive. This all has a part in connection with the economic handling of lish here. .49 Going back again to the question of the railway rates, we believe that if they are too high they reflect upon our boasted Railway Commission. We have long believed that body and its beneficient work as a rate controller was a false alarm and a delusion. As a court for equalizing rates and maintaining good stiff rates for the transpoi-yafion com- other fellow. Electric Light For Terrace. Geo.
