CANADIAN CASUALTIES NEARLY 6000 LAST WEEK Fort Vaux Has At Last Fallen To The German Forces Germans Are Still Supressing Details Of Naval Losses •'••-.ai ! ; ii i i i i i .. .. — Russian Gains Continue Along Eastern Battle Front Naval Battle Of Jutland Described By British Paper A summarized report of the naval battle of Jutland is published in Old Country papers. Describing the battle the report quoted says: Whole German Fleet. "Admiral Beatty, with battle cruisers and supporting battleships, had before him the whole of the German battle fleet, and Admiral Jelllcoe still some distance away. The opposing fleets were moving parallel to ore another in opposite directions, and but for the master manoeuvering on the part of Admiral Beatty the British advance ships would have been cut off from Admiral Jellicoe's grand fleet. "In order to avoid this and at the same time preparo the way so that Admiral Jelllcoe might envelop bis adversary, Admiral Beatty immedi ately also turned right around 16 points, so as to bring his ships parallel to the German battle cruisers and facing in the same direction. Aa soon as he was round, he increased to full speed to got ahead of the Germans and take up a tactical position in advance of their line. He was able to do this owing to the superior speed of our cruisers. Three Vessels Lost. "Just before tbe turning point was reached, the Indefatigahle sank, probably from striking a mine, and the Queen Mary and Invincible were also lost at the turning point, where, of course, tbe high seas fleet concentrated its fire. A little earlier, as the German battle cruisers were turning, the Queen Elizabeth had in similar manner concentrated her lire on the (Continued from Page Two.) Jury Disagreed In Gosden Case Which Comes Up Next Assizes Victoria, June S.—The jury in the Gesden trial has disagreed and has been discharged by the presiding judge. The jury, It is believed, lined up along political lines. There were nine for conviction and three for acquittal. The case was traversed to the next assizes. This trial was the one of Robert R. Gosden for perjury on an information, sworn to by M. A. Macdonald, M. P. P., based on the sworn evidence of Gosden that Macdonald paid him $.">0 in connection with the plugging scheme of the by-election in Vancouver. liefore the case closed in the court, evidence of a sensational character was given for the defense. W. K. Courtenay a well known Victoria barrister, and law clerk of the Legislature, said thai on Tuesday after Easter M. A. Macdonald had come to him to ask for an advance on his sessional Indemnity Immediately after the House arose, but Mr. Courtenay could not make the advance, as only Mr. T. Fell, K. C, clerk of the House, was the one who could make the advance. Mr. Fell was away at that time, so Mr. Macdonald came to him. The incident was not a usual one for him, he said, as Mr. Fell usually received such ap- i plications. Miss A. M. Allen, cashier at the Empress Hotel, produced her petty cash book. By referring to it she was able to say that she loaned Mr. Macdonald $f>0 on April 25. He repaid the money the next day by paying $1(30, the balance to go on his i account. There was an I. O. U. for I the $50 loan and it was, returned the next day. She said the money was j paid out'at about 2 o'clock in the J afternoon. Mr. Macdonald had never borrow- I ed any money from her before, and ! he could nol very well have borrowed from any other official of the ] hotel, she said. Hampshire and the loss of Lord Kitchener follows: "I have to report with deep regret that His Majesty's ship Hampshire, Captain Herbert J. Savill, R.N., with Lord Kitchener and his staff on befard, was sunk last night at about and by a mine or a torpedo. "Four boats were seen by observers on shore to leave the ship. The wind was north-northweat and heavy seas were runnng. Patrol vessels and destroyers at once proceeded to the spot and a party was sent along the coast to search, but only some bodies and a capsized boat have been found up to the present. As the whole shore has been searched from the seaward I greatly fear that there is little hope of there being any survivors. "N'o report has yet been received from the search party on shore. "H. M. Canadian Casualties Last Week Upwards Of Six Thousand Ottawa, June 8.—Upwards of six thousand Canadians had fallen last week stated Major General Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia, addressing the 77th Overseas Battalion. The great majority of these, he said, were v/ounded and were anxious to return to the front. The London Times correspondent ln writing of the fighting at Ypres last week, where the Canadians distinguished themselves says: "It Is considered by competent judges that the character of the bombardment here during the last two or three days represents the high water mark thus far attained on the western front. It certainly has been, and continues to be, of the most terrific severity. It has been so marked as to almost create a new phase in the war. The scale on which guns and ammunition were used is almost incredible, judged by any standard of experience. "Whatever the outcome of the present lighting may be, you must be prepared to hear that the Canadian losses have been very heavy. As compensation for their losses, the Canadians have the satisfaction of knowing that no troops could have shown finer gallantry than themselves. Their spirit is splendid." Grand Flee! In Sight. 'The Grand Feet was now in sight, coming up fast in three directions. The Queen Elizabeth and consorts now altered their course four points to starboard and drew in towards the enemy to allow Admiral .lellicoe to deploy into line. The Grand Feet was perfectly nianoeuveretl and the very difficult operation of deploying between the battle cruisers and the Queen Elizabeth was perfectly timed. Admiral .lellicoe came up and fell in behind Admiral Beatty's cruisers and followed by the damaged but still servicable Queen Elizabeth, steamed right across the head of the German fleet. "The first of the ships to come into action were the Revenge and Royal Oak, with their 15-inch guns, and the Agincoiirt which fired.from her seven turrets with the speed almost of a .Maxim gun. The whole British fleet had now become concentrated. They had been perfectly manoeuver- ed so as to cross the "T" of the high seas ileet. and, indeed, only decent light was necessary to complete their work of destroying the Germans in detail. "The light did improve for a few minutes and the conditions were favorable to the British fleet, which was now in line approximately north and south, across the head of the Germans. Admiral .lellicoe smashed up three of the German ships, but the mist came down and the visibility suddenly failed, and the defeated high seas fleet was able to draw off in ragged divisions."
