The entrenching works arount Faloniki are being pushed actively forward. The enemy has made no attempt to cross the Greek frontier. Allied Troops At Front, • Paris, Dec. 24.—General Bonnal states that the Allied forces at Saloniki number 172,000 and that number is being increased daily. The Allies occupy a semi-circle bei yond the range of the heaviest guns, and defensive works have heen built which are open to the sea routes, and which will enable the Allies to resist a force two or three times greater than their own number. London, Dec. 24.—Telegraphing from Saloniki the Daily Mail correspondent says: "Everything points to the belief that despite Greece's protests the Austro-Germans, Turks and Bulgarians will cross the Greek frontier directly they are ready. It is reliably reported that the Turks have concentrated two divisions of cavalry and artillery close to the Greek frontier at Nevrokop and Kus- tendit." In The Dardanelles. London, Dec. 24.—On the Dardanelles last night and this morning all has been quiet. During the afternoon of Dec. 23 our artillery shelled effectively the Turkish trenches. We also retaliated against the enemies artillery on the Eutopian shore. Turkish Cruisers Destroyed. Russian warships in the Black Sea have sunk the Turkish cruiser Midi- rill, formerly the German cruiser Breslau, and have disabled the Sultan Selim, formerly the Goeben. It will be remembered that those two German cruisers passed through the Dardanelles shortly after the outbreak of war. Some German infantry, which were assaulting the trenches and the connecting tunnels in the section of Lembaerry, were dispersed by our fire. Between the Somme and the Oisc our batteries aemolished a German trench. In the Vosges the enemy, after a violent bombardment, made an attack along the whole front of the positions recently captured by us. They were everywhere repulsed. BRITISH LOSSES HAVE BEEN OVER HALF A MILLION l.onoon, Dec. 24.—Replying to a question in the House of Commons last night, Premier Asquith said that the total British casualties up (o December 9 were 528,227. Shipping men express satisfaction over the new Premier's attitude towards the scarcity of tonnage at this porl, and the announcement that decisive legislation would be brought down at the next session of the Legislature dealing with the problem, says tne Vancouver World. E. H. Beazley, Manager of the Union Steamship Company, remarked to The World that he was pleased to see that Premier Bowser had taken congnizanco of the acute need of marine transportation for the dcveloc- nient of the lumbar industry and the Province generally. Other shipping men expressed themselves along similar linos. Captain James Stewart, whose outline of a scheme for the procuring of a Vancouver fleet appeared in these columns recently, said be trusted that the most modern and up-to-date shipping facilities would be provided the port as the result of Premier Bowser's efforts. The 700,000,000 feet of lumber which is at present the tide-water capacity of the British Columbia mills, would, he said, provide a cargo for a fleet of 175 steamers annually out of the ports of this Province. A fleet of ten steamers could make frequent trips during the year. "Oi ly a comparatively few ships have left British Columbia ports during the past year. Now, if the capacity of our mills is 700,000,000, it follows that there is a desperate congestion in the lumber mills, because the amount shipped overland is not as much as offers for marine transportation by a long way. The need, therefore, for ships Is absolutely urgent. I trust that the Government will provide a fleet of steel steamers or take the initiative in such provision and not revert to wooden ships or sailing ships which, after all, are practically a thing of the past." In "Uncle Bill," a three-act comedy, there is an abubndance of material to keep the house in roars of laughter. The scene is laid in New York, in thg cafes of that great city. There is also a two-act drama, en titled "When Youth Was Ambitious,' which should appeal to young and old, while "Off for a Boat Ride" will provide no end of laughter. HAD PLANNED TO COME BACK TO PRINCE RUPERT Thomas Dunn Expected To Return To This City In Short Time. The death of Thomas Dunn has come as a shock to many in this city. It was his Intention to come back to Prince Rupert as soon as he was strong enough to stand the trip. The change to this climate, it was felt, would have had a decided benefit upon his health. o E.
