Prince Rupert will before long have a steel industry to rank with thc most thriving on the American continent. Today it is announced by Mr. Jas. D. Sword that with Mr. H. K. Owens, C. E., and other associates he has just taken over a tract of iron ore deposits ion Louise Island, Queen Charlotte group. The sum of $260,000 is represented by the transaction, and the property is being turned over to one of the largest steel corporations on the American continent. The ore is one of the finest iron showings on the Pacific coast assaying 68 to 69 per cent of metallic iron, no sulphur, and only a trace of phos phorus. It is equal in quality to the Swedish ores now used for the finest tool steel. Development work is to commence this spring. Many millions of tons of the ore are on the ground, and by the construction of 2 1-2 miles of railway and a dock, lhe ore can bc landed at Cumshewa Inlet and delivered on Puget Sound points or the Fraser River for $2 a ton and at Prince Rupert for $1.50 a ton. Sylvia Pankhurst, daughter of the leader of the British militant suffragettes, and who has been imprisoned because of her activities in the cause in the streets of London, is at New- York to instruct the American women in the latest English methods of bringing about woman suffrage. "Will the English women get the ballot?" she was asked. "They will," was the prompt reply. "Wc will get the ballot in a year's time. We have the assurance from the Premier that that old bill will reach its third reading during the next parliament. That is all we want the third reading. Then our just rights will come." Teats of Real Education A professor in the university of Chi- j cago told his pupils that he should consider them educated in the tyst sense I of the word when they could say yes ! to every one of fourteen questions ! that he should put to them. It may interest you to read the questions. | Here they are: Has education given you | sympathy with all good causes and made you espouse them? Has it made you public-spirited? Has it made you a brother to the weak? Have you learned how to make friends and keep them? Do you know what it is to be a friend yourself? Can you look an honest man or a pure woman straight in the eye? Do you see anything to love in a little child? Will a lonely dog follow you in the street? Can you be high-minded and happy in the meaner drudgeries of life? Do you think washing dishes and hoeing corn just as compatible with high thinking as piano-playing or golf? Are you good for anything to yourself? Can you be happy alone? Can you look out on the world and see anything except dollars and cents? Can you look into a mud puddle by the wayside and see the clear sky? Can you see anything in the puddle but mud? Can you look into thc sky at night and see beyond the stars. Ctln your soul claim relation ship with the Creator? |that will help solve the rainy-day prob- '; lem and prove a valuable educator at (the same time. I got the idea from my 1 little daughter, who is in the fourth grade and beginning to study geography. She was studying about Japan and was ransacking all the papers and magazines in her effort to find pictures that would help her to understand. Then the idea was born. An old book may be used. Two-thirds of the leaves must be cut out to make the thickness right when the book is completed. I have found that flour paste is about as good as anything to paste in the material. Divide the book into as many departments as you wish countries, and at the top of the first page of each division paste a plain strip of paper with the name of the country written upon it, as for instance Japan, China, Russia, and so on. In the back part it is well tohave a department of miscellany, for often some interesting item about some place that we have not given a department may be found. Now comes the collecting of the material. Hunt up all of the old papers and magazines and set the children to work selecting pictures of cities and people and places of interest in the various countries. Pictures give thc children better ideas of foreign life than any amount of reading. You will readily see what a lot of material may be collected in this way and how rapidly the book will grow. Every paper will contribute something of interest. You will find yourself growing as interested as the children, and really such a book when completed makes a fine reference book. A Working Girl Novelist The prize awarded annually by the Goncourt academy for the most original and meritorious book of the year will probably go this year to the poor Parisian seamstress, Marguerite Au- doux, for a novel entitled "Marie- Claire," which records thc bitter struggle of her early life and took her ten years to write. Left an orphan at an early age, educated at a convent til' she was twelve, she became a farm servant, and minded sheep and pigs in return for her keep. The town called her, and she went to Bourges, where she earned a couple of francs a day by mending old clothes. At the age of 18 she made up her mind to go to Paris, and reached the capital with just 3c in her pocket. Finally she got work as a dressmaker. A year ago her sight began to fail her, and she decided to see if "Marie-Claire" had any value. Madame de Noailles was shown the book, but was horrified at the bad spelling. Octave Mirbeau, the dramatist, was not deterred by this fault, and was so impressed by the poignancy of the work that he took the authoress under his wing and helped her to get her story published. DAILY COOKING RECIPE Pineapple Salad Take one can of pineapple, drain off all the juice, and one-half pound of marshmallows cut up in small pieces. Take your salad dish and put first a layer of pineapple and then a layer of marshmallows until thc di8h iB two- thirds full. Cover with a good thick layer of whipped cream. The sliced pineapple cut up in small pieces is preferable to the grated. This makes a good sized salad and is excellent. Entertaining the Kiddies Irma B. Matthews writing in the Mothers' Magazine makes an interesting suggestion. She says: The traveler's scrapbook is one thing PRACTICAL HOUSEHOLD HINTS If a curtain or portiere pole is rubbed with hard soap before being put up the draperies will slip on easily. (Special Correspondence) Massett, Jan. 25.It is expected that authentic information, regarding the opening of coal lands to pre-emp- tors, will be received shortly. Thousands of acres of the best farming land in the province will then be available forjthe settler. The lack of telegraphic anel steamer communication is a hardship to the settlers on Massett Inlet. A fortnightly steamship serviccin a growing portion of the province, with no other means of getting outside, is a drawback that can only be realized by those within a few hours' journey of Prince Rupert. The need of another steamer on this route, giving a weekly set vice, has been brought before the people interested. Three marriages are on the lapis in Massett. These unions will mean a record of five marriages during the present month. Watches Daily Edition. Thursday. Jan. 26 Go On; Sic 'em! The question of whose house is on fire makes all thc difference in the world to some people's sense of humor. Three weeks ago, in certain quarters, a terrific howl was being made about the delay in thc electric lighting plant. Accusations were made by one somewhat irresponsible parly that the delay was Intentional, and for an improper purpose. The whole future of the city, and our hope of heaven seemed to depend on having the electric light turned c:n immediately. Even Mr. Manson referred to the matter in announcing his platform, and with a great show of sincerity promised "If the plant is no', completed before January 12th, I will undertake io huve the electric light plant in operation within ten days after my election." Well, the ten days were up last Sunday, but there is no light. Neither is there any howl. Mr. Manson is Mayor. Alderman Smith is still Chainran of the Light Committee, and the gentleman who had an attack of etlitorial hydrophobia because the light was not on last Christmas has been a member of the Council for two weeks. For ourselves, we quite understand lhat these delays are unavoidable. We do not accuse anyone of grafi or incompetence. Our own idea is that the plant haa progressed as will as could be expected. But Alderman Newton is different. After those terrible tirades of his before his appointment to office, his silence now is exceedingly funny. II cannot be that he is careless of the public welfare since his elevation to otlice, for he has announced his intention to fire all the city employees who can be dispensed with by hook or by crook. Il cannot be that he is unaware that the Mayor sailed away from his job without taking any stpps to redeem his promise in regard to the electric light. We would hate lo suspect Alderman Newton of etlitorial cowardice, but it certainly looks as if he is scared to give Mr. Munson and Alderman Smith n jolt over the delay in the electric light plant. We appeal to our contemporary to show- its spunk and sit.gleness of purpose. There is nothing to be afraid of. Go on; sic 'em! With bagpipes, haggis, wee drapptea of the national beverage, eloquence and good fellowship, the 162nd anniversary of the birth of Robert i'-rMs wi>s (,*l- ebrated by the S;. Andrews ,v'" .> at their Burns banquet lasl night. The event was an unqualified success. The opinion was fr ely oxpreosod that in the excellence of lhe repast, the flow of soul, and the high order of the speeches, the banquet put >n the shade anything previously attempted in the city. Mini* host, Peter Black, of the Central Motel, vice-president of the society, was the su ject of very hearty con ratulations at the close for his part in the evening's success. The large dining room was splendidly illuminated and decorated for the occasion, and tIk* service excellent. It was well after three in the morning before most of tht guests attempted to depart. All agreed that it was a celebration such as would have pleased the heart of the poet himself. The toasts were proposed by the chairman, Mr. Geo. \\V. Kerr and rt- sponded to by representative speakers. "The immortal memory" was made lhe occasion for a review of the poet's life and work by Mr. Thomas Met'Iy mont. Acting Mayor Smith and Alderman Pattullo sketched the possibilities of Prince Rupert's future under wise development in response to "Th,* city we live in." "Scotland" eloquently responded to by Rev. K. VY. Kerr, M. A., brought also some good stories. One was about the Scotchman's landlady who cleaned the inside out of the haggis before serving and complained lhat ther,* was very little left. Rev. VY. II. McLeod and Mr. 11. p. McRae spoke (or "Canada," praising the part of the Scottish pioneers in laying the foundations of prosperity and national character. A strikingly affective sketch of the resources of British Columbia was given by Mr. A. M. Manson in reply to "Our Province." To the same toast, Mr. F. H. Mobley contributed incidents gleaned from his own experience while mining und prospect ing in the farti orth. He spoke of the vast mineral wealth awaiting the advent of the railroads. "Kindred Societies" were represented in telling responses by Mr. K. .V. Woods for the Sons of England, Mr. Morris Soskin for the Hebrew Voting Mill's Association, Mr. T. Trotier for the French-Canadian Club, and Mr. W. P. Lynch for the Irishmen. The hitter's tribute to Burns as a poet was unexpectedly eloquent and telling, and breathed a real intimacy with the poet's spirit. "Imperial Forces" was responded to by Mr. J. F. Macdonald, and "The Press" by Alderman S. M. Newton and Mr. .1. S. Cowper, in effective speeches. The latter created a good deal of merriment by saying that the greatest thing Burns accomplished hail been quite overlooked. Burns was thc only man who had succeeded in bringing lhe editor of the Empire and the editor of the Optimist to see eye to eye upon any one question. In true Scottish accent and fashion Mr. David Thomson paid tribute to the toasl of "The Ladies." acknowledgl d for them by Mr. James Russell, whose rendering of Scottish humorous songs in splendid voice, was one of the greatest helps to the evening's success. Songs from the poet were given hy Mr. C. \\Y W. Gauld, Jas. Black, W. M. Brown and Jus. Dick, and an excellent rendering of Tarn (.'Shunter by Mr. W. ti. Dennis.
